Crash Essay Competition-

Schumacher says Red Bull are out in front, and Horner says it is too hard to tell who is where from winter testing since we don't know what fuel loads other teams were testing with.

Explain how both can be right.

Michael knows the fuel load which went into his car and can have a fairly good guesstimate of the minimum fuel loads which went into other teams cars to complete their laps. This says to me he knows the Mercedes couldn't do those times with the hypothetical minimum loads Red Bull were running. So if he's been straight with us, we all now know the Mercedes isn't as fast as the Bull.
Red Bull on the other hand are not given away anything.

Classic Michael. Lull everyone into a false sense of security and then *POW* - 8th World Drivers champ. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Mercs lap the Red Bulls in Melbourne.

Seriously though, Its real simple how Michael knows (unless he's bluffing) how fast the Red Bulls are. If he's out there running with almost no fuel in the tank and Vettel is on track too posting better times, then he knows the Mercedes cant catch the Bull EVEN with no fuel in the tank. Common sense really.
This is how Alonso knew at this time in 2009 that the Brawn was "A half second faster than any car on the track" according to him. Apparently, he was chasing a Brawn at the time with an empty tank, and it was still outpacing him quite handily.
This is the sort of way the drivers develop their opinions.
