@Googolplex

Unfortunately again you're way off the mark, three weeks ago Whitmarsh said,

"It looks tight, sadly we're not the dominant team, that's the bad news for me. But the good news is I don't think anyone else looks dominant either. Red Bull look strong, Ferrari and Mercedes look pretty reasonable, so that's encouraging."

As you see, he's not backing off from anything. You really need to read around the subject a bit more.

He's making assumptions based on testing times, especially long runs. So in reality we can't really know for sure. But Lotus, Mercedes and Mclaren look like they're on similar pace. Ferrari look like they're slightly off the pace, but that could change when they get to Melbourne.

And Redbull with the old package looked on par with the other top teams, however we didn't get to see what they could do with the new package. So they might be ahead once again. Guess we'll find out this weekend!

Looks like they haven't figured out how to copy something from Red Bull, or steal the blueprints from Ferrari (a la 2007) yet this year, but never underestimate the underhandedness that is McLaren.

@Ptolomy
Troll alert!!
Get real m'boy, if any team has a tendency to be "underhanded", it is Ferrari (2010 - "Fernando is faster than you", 2011 - floppy front wings etc.).
MAC will win on merit and skill, IF they win.
It's too early to give any definitive predictions, as has been said ALL over this site and others since the end of the last tests. Wait till Thursday for FP1, then, MAYBE, we will have a better idea.
But Q3 will be the big one.

"We expect to win races and, if we win enough, that should lead to the championship."

Whitmarsh's statement tells all, no more need be said..
How sweet it is

droog. you usually post sensible comments, but your latest.....?? you pick on ferrari yet ignore the many infractions by mclaren. message to lulu "no he wont pass you". same year! then last year, you claim that ferrari had some influence in having the front wing of rbr stolen? first of all, rbr say they had recovered the full front wing. secondly, ferrari would have to have staff all around the track waiting for the bull to have an off so they could grab a wing. they could not have gotten the wing, as otherwise their effort would not have been disastrous!
you seem to have a dose of the paranoias
