I don't know which is more stupid of the FIA, this was a genuine mistake, not due to neglect, to gain position or anything sinister but the FIA is so stupid as they can't to distinguish it... or the even more stupid decision fining MErc 5K as if that would stop similar mistake from happening... like it does each and every year...

They are like 6 form kids who just become prefects, i.e. give them a little power and them a$seholes start tripping on it.

rmedia. the fault is really with the fia. they decided that pit stops could add interest to a race. then they decided to make sure that tyres wouldnt last. as a pit stop costs time, the teams develop equipment to speed up wheel changes. after a spate of wheel nuts falling off, due to rushed stops, a safety pin was mandated. the teams now use quick action "nuts and clips". but human error still comes into play, and an unsafe car can be released, as it was today. to speed up stop even more, the could do away with wheel nuts. imagine the carnage then!
a fine will help ensure that merc improve their controls. the only thing is that 5k is far too small a fine. nobby probably has more in his pocket!
if teams know that the fines were big, they would try and ensure that sloppiness cannot occur.

Rich, the world has gone mad and now days as people wants everything accountable no matter what, someone has to answer to it. This is ridiculous. I dont blame the FIA or anyone just as MSC or JB didnt blame the crew...

FIA knows that and that is the only reason they can only fine MERC 5K... they can never justify more than that as they have no grounds and if they find them say 100K then what? they will have a court case in their hands, and then it would be thrown out as there were NO MOTIVES to mess up a wheel change.

That is why the whole thing is so stupid, it is ineffective because no one can enforce something to prevent mistakes that happens in life...

I think the FIA had every reason to fine Mercedes much more, as the team were fully aware of the error, the team released the car despite the tyre change not having been safely completed, and from what it sounded like from the broadcast radio transmission, Schumacher only stopped once he realised there was a problem and not beacuase he was told to by the team.

If his wheel had come off and bounced into the crowd and killed someone, who would have been blamed?

If they knew they wouldn't have released the car, so stop making out as if they knew they didnt secure the wheel properly but thought: hell let him go anyway it might tighten itself again...

As soon as they discover what happened Michael already stopped the car cos its obvious from the vibration etc... TV viewers only get selected and delayed voice comms...

I didn't say they knew when they released him, but they released him unsafely when the front tyre man clearly hadn't finished his work. The team could have got him to stop, probably before the end of the pit lane, but instead they allowed him to rejoin the track without telling him. He had gone some distance before he pulled over of his own accord.

As I said, the radio message that was broadcast suggested that he hadn't been told but rather decided for himself that something wasn't right.

Watch the footage, the front right wheel man was waving his hand to say that something wasn't right and they still released the car. It's just one of those things that happens in the heat of the race, but the FIA are absolutely right to punish it. Even though it's an insignificant amount of money for an F1 team maybe it will make teams review their wheel change and release procedures to ensure that unsecured wheels do not end up on the circuit. Let's not forget that unsecured wheels (or any other part of a car for that matter, just ask Massa) can kill/maim people.

YES the tire man did try to stop the release but as it is automatic green light now he was to late the real problem has to be in the wheel gun that gave the signal to say wheel on and when the four guns give the all go the green lights up and away you go . Being automatic without human inport brings time down to about 3 seconds . Top marks to MS for taking right decision and pulling car up and i don,t know if its just me but having watched MS in both stints in F1 i like him this time much better just seems to be enjoying his racing and still has the skills and class by not spitting the dummy at wheel changer

Yep, the system (green lights) let them down and they'll no doubt review it. And yeah, I've got a whole lot more respect for MS this time round, he stopped the car when he realised it was a very real safety issue (how many of the other younger drivers would have done this instead of trying to get back to the pits ASAP and risk sending a wheel into someone's head????), and instead of having a rant at the wheel man's expense he took it on the chin and explained that F1 is still a team game.
