It is just plain stupid to suggest that a driver who gets past a driver whose tyres are going off at the end of a race has not beaten that driver on merit. You well know that at different stages of a race a driver's tyres will be at different performance levels. Seb having gone out after Q2 (bearing in mind qualifying is all part of the racing) can hardly claim he didn't have as good a tyres for the race as Mark.

oh bruce. i told you that you shouldnt be watching f1!
to make it simple for you....
seb started 11th on grid, but dropped back on first lap to 15th. with tyre stops etc and driving, he worked his way up to 2nd, but finished 5th. now if you are 15th and finish 5th, you have passed 10 cars.
webber started fifth and ended up fourth. to me that is he made up ONE place.

googol. seb ran half the race on one set of tyres, just as kimi tried to do, and rosberg did (but fewer laps). there was a debate as to whether a three stop or a two stop was faster.nico handled the two stopper better, but seb very nearly did as well.
of course you will root for mark, but he is still being bested in race speed by seb.

Both drivers dropped 3 places off the start, ie by lap 2 Mark was running 9th and Seb 14th. They stayed in those positions until their first tyre stops. So by your standards Richard, Mark passed 5 cars (not one) and Seb passed 9. Which proves nothing - it's always easier to pass the midfield runners.

If anything it could suggest that Seb's driving has deteriorated - Mark is still struggling with his starts, but now Seb seems to have caught the same disease.

Richard build a bridge and get over it please.

The way you express it is not the way the race was conducted.

You are excluding Pitstops by competitors of Seb and not accounting for the pitsops of Mark.

RBR is a good team with two good drivers. Regardless of what spin you wish to place on the race Mark came 4th and Seb 5th.

Mark Qualified 5th, Seb Qualified a lot further back.

Richard, I think you're nuts...the only reason Webber beat Vettel in China is because his tires wore out? Vettel had one fewer pit stop than Mark, which catapulted him from the back 10 into the top 5. If both of them ran a three pit stop strategy, Vettel would have been nowhere...and let's recall last year in China, where Webber came from 18th place to finish 3rd. Vettel did no such thing, here. I know you're a Vettel fan, but let's be reasonable.

And also...

"webber still needs to lift his game and get ahead of seb ON MERIT."

I would say that out-qualifying Vettel in all three of the races so far IS getting ahead on merit.

freejack. the question of two or three stops was addressed by me. the teams were unsure which was fastest. nico WON on a twostop, button was second on a three stop. kim and grosjean were on two stops but finished behind seb.

and further, it is not quali which counts. a one lap speed does not make a champion, ask lulu. it is RACE PACE!
tell me please, how often has webber beaten seb on pure speed during a race?

It doesn't matter how often Webber has beaten Seb on pure speed during the race. At the end of the day, it's how well the driver's nurse their tyres. It's about using their head, not flooring it and hoping for the best but what matter's is the standings and as much as I like Seb, The reality is Mark has the upper hand and all credit to him.
