Don't understand doing some goofy demo run instead of real track time with car that has some issues.

You would think with the limited running the drivers do these days ANY real track time behind the wheel would be a good thing.

The team has PR commitments but making regular drivers miss this test instead of working with the engineers seems odd to me.

Mclaren for sure out to have a reason of sorts for not assigning their two race drivers for this test which is regarded by all teams as an important test for new development parts.
One can (me included) only disagree with mclaren's decision but without knowing their line of reasoning.
On the other hand everybody (me included) should feel rest assured that the decisions they take are (in their believe/best judgment) to be in the best interest of the team.
