F1 » Could aborted talks have made Alguersuari a 2012 frontrunner?

Jaime Alguersuari was reportedly approached by Lotus F1 about 2012 - before the Spaniard's rebuff sent the Enstone team in pursuit of Kimi Raikkonen.

richard - we have that expression too and like Jose I was confused as to what you were referring to. I guess the lesson is if you are a STR driver and you get another offer, take it. His fault seems to be trusting STR. Now that it has happened to so many drivers at STR no one should be surprised when it happens to them.

Mark,
Thanks, I think the STR assured Alguersuari he had a drive
for 2012. Mark stated his big mistake was he trusted
the honcho's at STR...
Remember Sea Bass?
Big mistake right Rich?

It might seem like he shot himself in the foot, but even tough STR is not a top team they do pay in full. So it's a desirable gig. None of the drivers has had to bring in their own personal sponsors (unless they want to).

Also Red Bull tends to sponsor other activities that their drivers do on their own time.

But Lotus could have asked him to subsidize his pay.

@ Jose,

In Bourdais' case he really was not trying hard at all. He was 4 times champion in Champ Car and he struggled to keep up with Vettel and then Buemi who was a rookie at the time.

It wasn't on the news, but Bourdais became very demanding and very arrogant once he got to F1. Didn't want to learn from anyone. Probably was his attitude that brought him down in F1. Had he kept an open mind he might still be in F1. He's super talented.

I'm not a big fan but I do think he deserves another chance. As a pundit he is boring and lacks credibility. I remember how he had that "exclusive" info about Robert Kubica not being able to lift a glass with his left hand, only for pictures of RK at a karting event to be posted online days later.

I think his card was marked after the Korea practice.

The words of the Red Bull adviser, " WE DO NOT ACCEPT THIS". Poor old Alguersuari hung out to dry by Marko who felt he deliberately blocked Vettel not in a race or qualli, but in a practice session and then Marko chewing him out in front of the Red Bull operatives while the Spaniard tried to explain.
