I think everything fell into place for Alonso.
The rivals were indeed faster than him.

Button giving pressure to Vettel definitely helped alot as the 2 have to fight against each other which gave tiny margin of breathing space for Alonso.

When under pressure from his Vettel, he had naughty Hamilton to come into the picture as well as lapping slower cars where he can use his DRS when under pressure from Button.

Brilliance driving and good luck won him the German Grand Prix. Ferrari is definitely slower than Red Bull and McLaren. You can judge that with Vettel sticking so close to Alonso throughout the race and Button coming back from behind to contest for the title.

Although Alonso does seem to be the cream of the crop and his winning drive was faultless, I am not sure I agree with him that the car is still lacking. I think it's equal to the Red Bull and McLaren and he is just sending a message to his team to keep pushing. It's not egotism either. He is an excellent motivator and never complains unnecessarily in public.

Totaly agree, If redbull and mclaren drivers perform at there best Alonso would not be able to match them over race distance, due to the car not being quite as good. But the ferrari is getting better all the time. But at least this year hamiltion, Button, Vettel and webber are closer in terms of there performances, So unless 1 of them steps forward and starts delivering consistant results each race alonso could pull this off!

""Even if he drives an airport trolley he wins."

So why hasn't he got more world championships under his belt?"

That's because there wasn't enough down force and the tires where a bit tricky.
