FIA president Jean Todt has called for renewed efforts to curb spending in F1, despite expensive rules changes looming on the horizon.

Changing the rules is good, it gives the smaller teams a fighting chanse to compete with the bigger ones. If the rules havent been changed from lastyear it would have been RedBull, McLaren and Ferrari on top all year, but because of the rulechange Lotus, Williams, ForceIndia and Sauber have been fiting with bigs every now and then. BUT if they want to save money they should have kept the V8 engines, ditch Kers and reduse aero from wing and put it more to the floor of the car. Changing the rules every 1-2 years keeps the racing more interesting because it allows the small teams to make some years top notch car and not just update the same old year after year because they can compete like that with the big ones.

Rhino is right. When rule changes are small, the cost is to adapt. When rule changes are big, the cost is that of near total rebuild. Small teams cannot absorb that. Which is why Todt is making this statement. Which is also why Todt sounds hypocritical. If you don't want teams to go belly up, quit changing the rules.

On the opposite side of the coin, we still have some F1 fans wanting a 'free-for-all' 'no-limits' Formula. If you want to kill F1 in double quick time, that's the route to take.

However, F1 must move with the times, and sticking with 18,000 rpm naturally aspirated 'gas-guzzlers' is not going to attract the right kind of technology or sponsorship, to F1, in the near future.

That's true Merlin. As amazingly refined as the internal combustion engine is, it's days are over. Had autos been electric when they first were invented, and someone today popped up with a petrol engine, everybody would go 'wth is that loud noisy thing that you have to put fuel in like an old stove? Turn that loud noisy smelly sob off!" We love our engines for the masterpieces that they are, but next to electric motors (which now are starting to rival in hp/weight ratio), they are very arcane, inefficient, and will probably be non-existent in 100 years from now. They definitely will not be manufactured as road cars anyways. People laughed at cars and didn't want to give up their horses back in the day either. But it's now a done deal, like it or not. Doesn't bother me any. I'd race with a rubber band motor just as long as it pulls like a scalded a$$ ape.

when it comes to efficiency petrol still rules the day. Give the teams the option to use KERS and many of them will dump it because the weight saving will mean more than a small boost every other lap. The truth is Formula 1 is going slower and slower, and by design. The rule makers are more important than the sport, and those who appeal to authority.

McLaren will benefit more than Mercedes from the rule change, and it will mean nothing for teams like HRT, cause they will have less money to pay for engineers and little bits because what little of their budget they have will go to building and designing another chassis to support the different motor/constraints.

You wanna make F1 affordable, get rid of the rules and the rule changes unless they are related specifically to safety.
Bring back refueling, and get rid of the fake weight restrictions that make not having KERS a penalty.

Dump the asinine Kers... Mucho money saved. Not impressed with the "Going Green" bull poop in F1. What the hell is next? Solar panel body's to help the Kers recharging or nuclear pellets in the fuel tanks. Keep the Green **** out of F1.
