If LH had this penalty he would probably start 5th and finish top 3. Now JB on the other hand will probably now start about 11th / 12th and finish in the same position. That is the difference between these 2 drivers

I agree, it is an irritating penalty for the fans of the driver, seeing a technical issue result in them being shuffled down the order. I would be interested in seeing perhaps a constructors points penalty, where 5 or so were taken off the talley. It has the chance to impact on the WDC too much. In some circumstances it is in no fault of the driver so why penalise them.

Imagine that this were the final GP of the year and your favourite driver had to take a 5 grid penalty through no fault of their own.

At least Button will probably get to start the race on a fresh set of whatever compound tyres. LOL

In the end it is a team sport. The constructor of the gearbox is part of the team too. He's lucky this 2nd box didn't fail in the race, that would have been an instant loss of points like Hamilton. Now Button has the chance to still get some next race again.

Why hasn't the gearbox usage rule changed in the same way the engine usage rule did? The engines used to have to last 2 consecutive races, now you get a certain number for the season (8 I think). Why not just say you get 4/5 gearboxes for the season?

Merlin, if you finish in the top 10 but your penalty takes you to somewhere around 14th you have to start on the tyre qualified on, so Button needs pole position

@ Sasha

This is a team sport, however when there are two separate championships, constructors and drivers, I don't see why a penalty should affect the drivers when on some occasions it isn't their fault. Now a days we are seeing enough driver penalties being handed down during/after the race as it is.
