F1 » JYS: Vettel no F1 great

Sir Jackie Stewart believes that Sebastian Vettel needs to prove himself away from Adrian Newey-designed cars before he can be called an F1 'great', but suggests the German would be mad to go to Ferrari just now....

You cant write a post here without peoples sensitivities being knocked. I mean, as a former world champion the guy is just expressing his opinion and as right or wrong as he may be one should really take all these commentaries with a pinch of salt. I personally said in an earlier post that no driver worth his salt is really great until they have driven for various teams and we are able to see there consistency no matter where they go. Having the best car is one thing, however, it is only when your car is not the best and your driving is sublime that you notice how good those drivers are. There is no doubting how good Vettel is but perhaps there is still a test awaiting him when he tries his luck elsewhere.

I am not a big Vettel fan but even I think Sir JS comments are tripe. JS won races in his day by 2 laps not 2 seconds including in his championship winning seasons. Any driver who wins a title ultimately has the overall best car on the grid. SV we need to remember has been the guy who put RB on the map in a consistent fashion. Taking nothing from Weber and those beforehand but no one put the string of wins and consistency together to take 2 titles with relatively little experience compared to the tough grid and tough teammates. Sorry but anyone saying that a driver who has won titles against the likes of Hamilton and Alonso isn't one of the greats is asinine. How can Alonso and Hamilton be considered one of the greats and Vettel not?

RGB/LTG and Indy2007 has been saying the RB5,6,7 and now 8 are top cars and any top driver would excel in these cars, unfortunately for Webs who is a good driver but is not a top driver.

Ihope Jackie's comments will educate some on here in how to differentiate between a top diver and super car., as i said Adrian Newey and his technical team are the real hero's

Last week it was Michael Schumacher, this week it's Seb Vettel. Who will Stewart flame next week? Fernando Alonso? Get over it old man, you're irrelevant. Thank you for your contribution to safety in the sport, but gracefully accept that records are meant to be broken and move on without looking like a bitter cogger.

I guess he doesnt consider Alonso a great driver either. What is up with all the piling on Vettle. Silly statements by Hamilton and Sir Jackie in consecutive days

I see from Stewart's comments that winning has nothing to do with being great F1 driverr. Maybe Karthikeyen and D la Rosa are the greatest F1 drivers, greater than Senna for driving the crappiest F1 car, to the finish line. I think a lot of Vettel haters too think along the same lines.
