F1 » JYS: Vettel no F1 great

Sir Jackie Stewart believes that Sebastian Vettel needs to prove himself away from Adrian Newey-designed cars before he can be called an F1 'great', but suggests the German would be mad to go to Ferrari just now....

Stirling Moss is rated as one of the greats yet never won a wc . Me i think seb lewis and alonso are all very good and could all become greats in time .
KGBVD you post like a guy who said he was gone for 2 weeks and i see you don,t want to register as well

Every time Jackie Stewart opens his mouth he puts his foot in it. What an idiot. Nothing he ever says makes much sense. I think he's senile.
Why does he talk highly of Alonso and Hamilton, but slag off Vettel?
Its because he's jealous. Vettel is going to make old has beens even more irrelevant than they already are. Stewart only won because his car was light years better than the others FORTY + YEARS AGO. Today, in the spec series they run, the cars are seperated by thousandths of a second, instead of the several seconds in Stewarts day.
By the way, after Vettel wins the title this year, he will already have matched Stewarts tally. Also, Vettel has already blown ANY other statistic that Stewart had into the weeds.
We should ask Vettel if he thinks Stewart is relevant anymore, or just a jealous old man.

That would be an interesting que. BTW Steward is nobody (as compared to Seb Vettl) to talk down more successful Vettel.
I think Seb will still say he is a great champion having done it 3 times, something which Seb is gonna do in a few weeks. It would make Seb with equal no. of championships look good.

If Vettel is no great, so would be Senna, Steward, and many otheers who have won in way faster cars and their teannates finished 2nd in wdc unlike Vettel's teammate. Interesting to note is that Vettel's teammate was never 2nd to Vettel in the same AN dominant car. lol. Somebody always beat him.

Also, talking down Vettel, the most successful driver on 2013 grid, makes other former wdc drivers on the grid look crap.

I think there is a lot of Team factor in Vettel's success. RBR has been a fantastic team for last 3 years with great designer and always providing their drivers with the best car.

Thats not the case with McLaren. They screwed Raikkonen even though they had a faster car and once he switched the team, the first year he became champion. No wonder why Alo pissed off with McLaren and with their policies. We can clearly see this year's situation. Poor McLaren.

cmon! vettel will 1 day go to ferrari yes he willl some day..but dont expect ferrari to give him a car that is as fast as RBR8!

The RB7 or RB8 are not fast cars they are cars that sticks to the ground due to high down force meaning the could go faster around corners than any other car. Do you think is F1 is a race up the M1 or M40 do you think it would be anywhere in the top 10?

for those haters who bashing vettel's achievement which only because of the best car, see this stats:

"... Vettel became BMW Sauber third driver at the 2006 Turkish Grand Prix, when former incumbent Robert Kubica was called up to replace Jacques Villeneuve for the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix.
On his testing debut, Vettel set the fastest time in the second Friday Free Practice before the race. In his second testing session in the 2006 Italian Grand Prix, he set the fastest time in both Friday practice sessions..."

even this gay is fastest at his testing debut! enough talk...

I'm a bit tired of the smug and superior tone JYS adopts when he comments on anything. And he seems to like commenting!

But he makes a fair point. Vettel is obviously brilliant but it takes more than being brilliant to be a "great". He needs to be tested in extreme adversity - as Hamilton is about to be, at Mercedes - before we start throwing labels like "great" around ...

After Sebastian wins the title this year Jackie, he will be more than your equal. He will be greater than you ever dreamed you were. He stands tall above you in the record books. So, if you say that Sebastian is "no great" then I guess that puts you down as less than a has-been.

Syd Watkins was an F1 great and never raced in an F1 race. David Purley was an F1 great (in my eyes) but I don't think he ever won a race, not even sure if he even got a podium. These are just my opinions, they are not facts. The same goes for Sir Jackie. One thing is for sure, he doesn't deserve the pillorying some above are giving him, especially when one remembers how far out on a limb he went to make F1 safer.
