F1 » Gutierrez to get unexpected Friday call-up?

A sickly Sergio Perez could make way for Esteban Gutierrez should his condition not improve ahead of Friday free practice at the Indian Grand Prix.

It will be good for Gutierrez to see if he has what it takes as he's driving in Abu Dhabi young driver test also.

I may be biased (as I want KK to remain), but I don't think Gutierrez is ready for F1 just yet. He has been outperformed by his Rookie team mate in GP2 this year and I still believe he would benefit from being test/Friday driver for another year with Sauber before moving up. If he's as good as some say then he should be able to fight for GP2 title next season.

Before anyone points out the obvious in that Gutierrez is ahead of Calado in the standings.. In the races I've seen this year Calado seemed to be an another level. Of course I could be wrong! Which is why it would be nice to see him in the practice session to see if he has it or not.

@LJ: Gutierrez has been expected to do big things for a few years now, but they never come. Calado has in his rookie year already proven that he has what it takes to match Gutierrez and on many occasions, outclass him. Far better driver than Esteban IMO. But like Perez, here's another Mexican riding a cash-wave into F1...

Having seen most GP2 races this year I would say the two were quite evenly matched. Sometimes Calado was the faster one, sometimes Guttierez. I think Guttierez got P3 because he had a chance to maximize the sprint races by finishing some of the feature races where he didn't go well in the top 8 and then make use of the reverse grid to still get decent points from the weekend.

In tend to agree with your general statement though, one would have expected a little bit better still from Esteban after he won the GP3 championship and after one year experience in GP2 (1st year wasn't great either). He hasn't shown the flashes of brilliance that Perez did in GP2 where he pretty much thrashed the field on some days.

KK out of F1 would be sad anyway, but even moreso if this guy subsequently underperforms in that car.

Thing is I think the guys at Sauber know Kamui is the better man for the job, eventhough Peter has been quite critical of him from time to time, but they are now stuck with Carlos.

They were all smiles padding each other on the back after they appeared to have struck gold with a good driver (Perez) and millions to boot to sweeten the deal but now two years on and the reality of being a team that needs paydrivers to stay afloat strikes them in the face hard.

Of course we'll look silly now if Esteban matches Hulk next year but I don't see it happening.

You are absolutely idiot...
Esteban one of the biggest talent of young drivers!
He was champion GP3, Formula BMW....Calado not
Calado couldt'n win feature race this year, and sometimes not fast :) where was at Singapure?? where was at Monza??? etc...
Calado good driver but Esteban more better, but of course sometimes made mistake.....everybody made mistake
Esteban will be champion. Not forget it....

Perez should sit this one out and let Gutierrez have a try
Full Friday practice, then qualify Saturday. We will get to
see his true talent. I would like to have him get more track
time..Anyway have a go, what happens happens.. Good Luck.

I am not sure why Kamui has such a loyal following. I think that he has been one of the biggest disappointments this season. The podium and good qualifying in Japan was largely down to the crashes of others. Other than that what has he done this year?
