A ten second stop-go penalty for causing a crash on lap 39 that took out Romain Grosjean and Mark Webber cost Sauber's Sergio Perez that chance to score points in Abu Dhabi.

Actually the safety cars hurt Kamui too, which made his race all the more convincing. First he was working hard to build a gap over Perez and Schumi, only to have it eradicated when the first safety car came out. Then he lost position to Perez, who hadn't worked his tyres quite as hard, in the restart. Went for an early pitstop to compensate, but then the second safety car came and ruined that advantage. I think performance-wise the two Sauber drivers were very evenly matched, but their races were quite different stories in the end.

As for Perez' accident, I think he was well over-ambitious. He wanted to pass that group quickly in order to go for Maldonado, but if he'd only had a bit more patience he could have had a really good result. He talks of a podium himself, that might not be completely realistic, but P4 could have been possible and P5 was pretty much in the bag. Shame to waste it like that.

Methinks Perez can't wait for 2013. He has been either overly excited or nervous since the announcement of his signing to McLaren IMHO. He should take it easy and just drive to get the points Sauber needs to overtake Merc on the Constructors Table.
