He is surprisingly candid about his rivalry with his current and future teammate here, even to the point where he's basically saying he now has a headstart to make sure the car suits him and not necessarily checo to make sure he's in front of him...I wonder if that is entirely in line with the team's best interest.

I think this was a weaker year for Button, but actually it's better to say that last year was exceptionally good for him and this year he's back to the regular Button level, which is IMO just about on par with the likes of Webber (maybe a bit better in races) and somewhat behind Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi and Vettel.

Next year will be another defining year for him one way or the other, that's for sure.

@sp123 - I'm guessing you're a Hami-Fan/Button-Basher (same thing, really) and the qualifying stats are the only thing you can take much comfort in. Yes, we know LH is quick around one lap. Funny thing is - despite starting behind LH for the vast majority of their 58 races, JB still manages to bag more points.

JB would have 5 poles this season without LH. So logically thinking - next year JB will get more poles and be one place further up the grid in the majority of races. Which in turn will give him a better chance of winning more races and scoring more points.

Assuming JB is over his tyre issues, which his 2nd half season performance seems to indicate he is. Plus the car and team will be more focused around him. Looking positive for JB - and he will have no excuses next year.

@Ginger Milestone No not a fan of either Mclaren driver But its not just the qualifying stats is it.

JB has had the worst record against his team mate this year only beaten by Massa / Alonso and Karthikeyan / DE LA Rosa. Not just qualifying, in all the races that both Mclarens have finished, JB has only been in front 3 Times.

Hamilton has retired from the lead the same amount of times that JB has won. LH has had twice the number of retirements of JB ( none his fault )and STILL managed to stay ahead in the points. Good Driver But he aint no Hamilton.

Give him the car and he can do the job, that is the problem, people on hear must think I hate him but that is a long way from the truth. I would like him to prove all the doubters wrong and win another championship but unless the car is clearly better and faster than the rest he falls away and his qualifying is a major problem.
He basically disapeared for about five races this season not quite sure what happened but he can't have a repeat of that. I hope McClaren take a good look at how they do things and try and get back to the Senna/Prost days when they were virtually unbeatable. I look forward to that happening and Button being champion again.

@sp123. You're not a Hamilton fan/Button basher. Oh really?? You should read your own posts. Yes I get your point. LH (personally) had a great season and JB had a poor one. In fact, a reverse from 2011- after which LH and his fans got a lot of stick. So I fully understand LH fans wanting to give it back.

But as regards to next season - LH won't be at Macca. So I don't see the point in using their respective performances this year as a sign of things to come Vs Checo. Unless you're suggesting Checo is as good as LH?

You said - Button is no Hamilton. But apparently Sergio Perez is !!

lol ...@ginger milestone: perez is nowhere near Hamilton's level...nd now Hamilton is anyways out of the picture, for Mclaren its necessary that Button takes the fight to Redbull, which he looks highly incapable of....2013 is going to be just a pass year for mclaren ,,maybe they will manage some wins on the way but definitely not the championship...m just hoping that Mclaren will manage to sign the Iceman back in 2014..He is the guy who can take the fight to Alonso, Vettel and hamilton

Lewis is irrelevant to McLaren and Jenson's performance next year. He won't be there - and Sergio is just not the same league as Lewis. (altho he can prove us wrong). To suggest Sergio will beat Jenson in the same way as Lewis did 16-4 in qualy is a bit of a stretch. But we'll see.

If McLaren and Jenson are quick and reliable they can definitely challenge for the WDC. But they need to up their game.

"We've learnt a lot and, in that period around Monaco and Canada, when I had some really bad races, we got a lot of information with the direction we took with the car".

So please enlighten me further Jenson how the above has been a positive, not scoring points and missing Q3 was painful to watch for a man of your caliber at several GP's this year.

Jenson sounds something similar to what Twitmarsh would say by not conceeding he faile i.e. trying to whitewash the situation by pretending it was all uselful data despite not scoring points...
