F1 » GP2 rivals waiting on Caterham?

Giedo van der Garde and Luiz Razia continue to consider themselves candidates for the vacant seat at Caterham, despite the team's Brazilian GP result changing the game.

At the end of the season there is absolutely nothing more annoying than the 'minnow' teams pretending that they have not yet made up their minds who is going to drive for them next season, when all they are really doing is holding out for the highest offer, for a seat, by a pay driver.
It's almost, but not quite, as nauseating as one of those TV quiz shows where the host says "And the winner is...(30 sec. pause with tension building music)... "Dipstick!!!"

Speaking on the issue of pay drivers, even though I prefer for him to get into F1 on merit I'm kinda suprised there is no mention of Rossi. Afterall with the return of the USGP I would've expect that to boost his chances of moving up going forward.

VdG is a pretty mediocre driver from what I've seen in GP2 this year. Razia looks like he's got some real potential and so despite coming with financial backing, I would be very happy to see him land a drive.

Reminds me of an early Massa.

I kinda agree but not quite. vdG has struggled to mount a real championship challenge in his 4 years in GP2 for various reasons (one of them being hit by Bianchi about 3 times while driving in good position in 2011), however he did pick up wins, poles and podia every year and he won the WSBR title before entering GP2. Only Perez really beat him as a teammate (and technically Pic by 1 point in '11 but that was not a good refelction of the season). Razia OTOH has really had 3 subpar/mediocre seasons in GP2 and only this past season did he somehow manage to get 2nd in the championship, partly on consistency. Based on results I would not say vdG is a great driver, but I also wouldn't say Razia is better.

Futhermore...let's face it all these guys they are talking about are not the new Vettel, Hamilton or FA. Heikki, Petrov, vdG, Razia, Pic and most of the others thought to be in with a shot of landing the seat are all quite good, but not the very best drivers. I think it's really kind of a wash which one they should go for in terms of talent, so I think unless a driver brings substantially more money to the team than either Petrov or vdG who have been there for a year it's kind of a questionnable decision. Unless they can get Kamui, but his name isn't really mentioned at this team so... All the others available are basically more of the same IMO.

Still got Bianchi for the Force India seat too. But while i'd like to see him in F1, he's still part of the Ferrari drivers academy and it doesn't look they're dropping him anytime soon...

Charles Pic obviously came in with a boatload of cash to have secured his ride so quickly. For a family that has 2 brothers in competitive racing the family a very much flush with cash.

Vitaly Petrov has outdone Heikki Kovalainen all season as far as race results. Heikki is their lead driver and he got beat in the car he has been developing for the past 3 seasons. Something most people didn't expect.

I think they should keep Petrov for another season. He might give them their first points in 2013.
