Slicks can be directional and obviously not because of tread pattern. It is carcass construction esp sidewalls.
I have raced on them and you can tell the diff pretty easily. Which reminds me of a story...

Was roadracing and autocrossing front-drivers way back and the problem was that max grip at the front required about 44-46psi. Not kidding. Anyway, still pushed the fronts so to tune the handling neutral one had to trim rear grip and drop the rears to about 24-27psi. That did the trick, but at that inflation the tire was too sloppy and it took too long for the rearend to take a set once you pitched it in. The seceret tip was to run the directionals wrong-way at the rear. You could run 32-22psi, de-flexing the tire, but at same lower grip and thus neutral handling.

Loved it when guys told me I had em on wrong. They would chuckle and walk away. I would smile, thank them, and then usually beat them. So, everyone had a good time. Hehe.

JB did well on the 2011 tyres - but of course, SV did quite a bit better. The Pirelli's this year were rubbish, but that's also one of the reasons we had such a close title race and multiple drivers winning races.

The sooner they get back to having a free choice of standard slicks, intermediates and wets for use in practice, qualifying and the race the better. The current tyres are a joke and do nothing for the racing. We already have Kers and DRS to help with overtaking, having crap tyres makes it into an expensive farce.

@ The Old Man, thanks for that. Are directional tyres a new thing for F1? JB makes a point of it, so I assume its something significant.

With tyres to his liking and NO MAJOR AERO CHANGES in 2013/14, so no field reset - it's looking very positive for JB and Macca.
