Murray Walker thinks Sebastian Vettel could re-write the F1 record books and outdo Michael Schumacher

Great as he (Murray Walker) was as a commentator, he got one of the lowest scores ever on BBC Mastermind on his F1 knowledge!!!!!!! Vettel to beat Schumi? I dont think so. The rules are too strict now for that compared to Schuni's era when he could pretty much do as he liked (and of course got away with it). Also the racing is much more competitive now.

Agree with the first comment - the rules today for both cars and drivers are specifically intended to make Schumacher style dominance very difficult to pull off.

But if .. IF he wins a fourth title next year, then seven is not so far away. And what he has done so far, like beating Mansells records last year in a car greatly inferior to Mansells, indicates that if anyone can do it, he can.

The remarks about Newey are getting embarrassing. The RB8 was a mediocre car, as can be seen by Webber finishing not just behind his teammate but also behind a Ferrari, a Lotus, and both McLarens. This years title was down to Vettel. Actually all three of them have been, but this year much moreso than the others.

If and when Vettel and Webber finish the season one-two, in the fashion of Mansell-Patrese or Schumi-Rubens, that will be the time to talk about how great the cars are and how mighty a sorcerer Newey is.

I cant see any reason he cant match or beat Schumacher's stats, with 26 wins out of 101 starts to schumachers 91 in 308 starts potentially Vettel could have 78 wins out of 303 starts, its the same with pole positions he's on 36 at the moment but again that could hit 108 out of 303 starts -but thats only if he continues to qualify and win at his current pace

records are there to be surpassed everyone thought Sennas pole positions wouldnt be beaten and that no-one would beat mansell's 14 poles in a season

A reminder of what a genuinely dominant car looks like, and why Schumi's records will be so hard to match.

There were 17 races in the 2002 season. The Ferrari's of Schumacher and Barrichello won 15 of the 17, and finished 1-2 nine times. And Rubens did not even start in two races! Schumacher finished on the podium 17 times out of 17 races.

You know a car is truly "the best on the grid" when it finishes the season first and second, taking numerous 1-2 race finishes along the way. But there have been no such cars since the "anti-dominance" rules changes in the 2000's. Without such cars I can't see Schumi's records for total wins and podiums being beaten. His 7 WDC's ... perhaps.

Of course Vettel can beat Schumi's records. Vettel is the youngest man to do EVERYTHING in F1. We have seen that he is capable of just about anything in an F1 car. And he has at least 10 more years to do it. But we must not forget that, if he does topple all of Schumi's records, that he was hand picked by Schumi himself as the new star of F1. Vettel is Michael Schumacher's protege. Schumi is Seb's mentor. With track records like these two and their close relationship and Schumi's altruism of course Seb can do it!

No in a Newey car. You really are blinded by your fanboisum or you just know nothing about f1. I think it may be a bit of both.
