Murray Walker thinks Sebastian Vettel could re-write the F1 record books and outdo Michael Schumacher

I could not disagree more with Murray Walker. Vettel is not a great driver. He has a great car, but when his car falters even slightly Vettel is not better than average. Red Bull will falter and Vettel will not be able to respond. The only driver I can see that could match Schumi is Alonso. He has won 2 Championships with inferior cars. And came very, very close to winning 2 more Championships with inferior cars.

don. did you not watch the brazil race? vettel came from last in a badly damaged car, with power turned down, no radio, and a mistimed pit stop with delay, and was still able to nearly catch his teammate, who was driving the same car, with no damage, perfect pit stops etc. slightly better than average, me thinks.

and what about abu dhabi? came from 30 secs behind, came third,(only 4 secs behind winner) and beat his teammate who started from the front of the grid, in the same car.

however, the laws of averages say that it will be extremely hard for seb to win the wdc next year. but there again, i said that last december too.

"Alonso .. has won 2 Championships with inferior cars"

Don, can you explain using numbers why you think that the 2005 and 2006 Renault was "inferior cars" but the 2012 Red Bull was not? What statistics led you to that belief?

@ JohnO - Senna more than proved himself in the Toleman and Lotus to deserve the best car at Macca, then even he couldn't do much about the Williams as they were so dominate.
But what about Schumi, after winning 2 WDC he went to Ferrari which was a crappy car. By then everyone knew he was easily the best so he took on a challenge instead of just wanting the best car and average team mate like Seb is.

Senna did exactly the same thing. He always wanted the best possible car and the worst possible teammate. You can make up whatever rules you wish for judging drivers by - I'd just like to see you apply them consistently to all drivers. If Schumi moving to Ferrari is the model by which all drivers are to be judged, then Senna - according to your own rules - is a sub-par driver. There's no way around it. By your own rules, the rules you want to apply to Vettel, Senna should have stayed at Toleman or Lotus and helped THEM win a title instead of swaning off to Macca to drive the best car.

Johno - He stayed at Macca for 2 years when the Williams were dominate. He still won races like Donington for example. He could of won a title at Louts if not for the car being so unreliable ! But at the end of the day these two are already greats who proved themselves many times without the best car so why not put your big girl panties on and want the same for Seb so he can be called a great aswell.
