Derek Warwick: Mercedes are working on a new car but their performance this year was not just disappointing, it was very, very poor

Lauda only started saying this when he went onto Merc's payroll and changed his tune overnight.

So when he called Lewis the greatest rookie ever i wonder if he was on the Mercs payroll then and i wonder who's payroll Warwick is on when calling Lewis the fastest in F1 .

Richy, not ranting just saying how many former f1 drivers keep saying that Lewis is either the best or fastest driver and wont be fooled by a young quality driver who has had the best cars in the last three seasons.

herts. who cares what is said about lulu when he was a rookie. he is not one for the last four years!

and as for your comment that vettel has only won because he is in the fastest car. then why did webber not come second in 10 and 11. further, all sites are saying that the bull is NOT the fastest car. do you know better?

and interestingly, seb passed made MORE passes than anyone else on the grid, so he has not had it all his own way.

Mark , that's why i feel Lauda's comments are credible because at times Lewis drove like a nutter in 2011 and Lauda was right in his condemnation of Lewis. Lauda is a bit like me who gives credit where it is due and criticism when deserved. Grosjean has had a shocker this year but if he turns it around in 2013 ill be the first to say well done unfortunately for what ever reason Lewis wont ever be judged like that maybe because of his taste in earrings or due to his uniqueness i really don't know.

Liam, i would say that at least 25% of the drivers have a better mind set than Lewis as he is not renown for this he has got wear he
is on raw talent and yes if he had a better mindset that would be a great addition to his natural speed and raw talent.

Here's a thought - LH has signed for three years - and presumably his personal marketing rights are far freer at Merc than they were at McL - so he'll bring in loadsamoney for all that time.

He's already made comments about "one day" going back to McL - Roll on three years - Button will probably be either retired or close to it - maybe the ideal time to go back and get back into a front-running car. All this assuming that Mercedes don't bring out a RB-beater, and that McL have a series of dogs.

But it's just a thought....for a Friday

@Hertfordshire - while you may be correct there is no denying that Lauda changed his opinion once he was on the Mercedes payroll. Once Ferrari stopped paying Lauda his consulting fee he was unusually harsh on them. I think that his opinion is influenced somewhat by who is or who is no longer paying him.

Warwick's remarks are a back-handed compliment, he's the fastest but an idiot for going to Mercedes.

Hard to say he's the fastest, maybe over a single lap although you'd have to put Hamilton/Vettel & Kimi in the same car to see that and if the balance is too his liking the Button would be there too and a few others. Does he have the best race brain? probably not.

It seems like there are a lot of people on here who have selective memory . But no problem this time next year they won't have to rely on their memory . Lewis will win races next year . I expect the same people who made derogatory remarks when i said Lewis will sign for Mercedes will be doing the same again . There was no sign of them saying they were wrong and i guess there will be no sign of the predictors of failure . But that's usually how it is . Quick to judge and condemn but not a sound when proved wrong .
