It's pretty straightforward to get a count of unique hits per page, as Grant suggested they probably use google analytics or other services providers who do that stuff, also the web hosting server can also give you this info in some cases.

As I expected Lewis Hamilton accounts for a huge chunk of the F1 content. He's covered in 5 of the stories. That's 50 percent.

For better or worse he generates lots of attention. I can see how distracting that can be in a sport that requires absolute concentration to be at your best.

Monitoring or managing inbound or outbound traffic on a web site is very common. Its the only way to optimize your efforts. My company currently uses software that not only tracks hits, it tells me where you came from and it allows me to see the next site you migrated to. In addition it records the IP address.
