So having a big budget, the ability to hire the most proven designers and have the best technical facilities available is in fact not an advantage at all?

Yes, Jaguar, Honda and Toyota were disappointing but Renault won several titles and races and up until the Brawn purchase, McLaren were effectively Mercedes semi-factory team.

Here's another example though: Williams were a winning team when they were working closely with Honda and then Renault, after that their resources were weakened and they lagged behind. Then they were BMW's semi-works team and moved closer to the top again, before being dropped and moving back to the midfield. Coincidence?

sodesu. macca budget is at least 50% higher than merc. aand as regards designers, it is obvious that the macca designers are streets ahead of the merc designers.
daimler say they wont increase their contribution, so with the extra cost of lulu, they will have to get even more sponsorship to stay at the same level as last year.

My point is it would be a risk to stay aswell. Merc was his only realistic chance to be a lead driver in a manufacturer team. Another thing is we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. They say they won't invest more now, but who knows what promises they've made to Hamilton. There may even be third parties involved to add to the whole thing, a la Alonso at Ferrari.

@factory who

Mercedes is different to the others in the fact its been in F1 as a works squad since 1993 of course it has been suppling engines but as a works package there there for the whole team, those otheres mentioned just came and left as a full team.

Aslo i think Ross brawn has been under estimated here, the team got left behind in the development race after brawn GP, with a big reg chance in 2014 i think its the right move especially since last reg change in 2009 brawn really prover he can out do newey.
