F1 » Perez 'up for challenge of winning at McLaren'

Sergio Perez knows he had big shoes to fill as he takes Lewis Hamilton's place at McLaren, and there's a lot of work ahead of him if he's to make a successful start to the 2013 season.

I think Perez will be fine @McLaren for a few years and then get sick of the micro management like so many have before him...But that's in a couple of years.

First of all he'll need to do well enough for the team to want to keep him but I foresee no problems with that. He has blistering pace (most of the time) that I remember from GP2. Especially on his day and on a track he likes he was unbeatable and I think that'll be the case in F1 with McLaren as well.

The only remaining questionmark is whether he'll be able to become consistent enough to mount a championship challenge, but if McLaren builds a car that can compete at the front that makes life a lot easier for him in terms of avoiding collisions.

The key will be mind management, no question about his speed, intelligence or talent. Hamilton was a subject of mind control from a very young age, thus easier to control in the earlier days at F1.

I tend to agree that Hulk might have been the better choice and even Koba who I rate equally highly as Perez (and in my mind maybe slightly better suited to drive a really quick car well) gets my symphaty vote, but I'm sure Perez is good enough to win races, in which case good enough will just be that for McLaren: good enough.

If he wins races next year nobody at the team will second guess the decision for him and against Hulk and Koba, even if those two could have done even slightly better.
