@Equin0x, I get what you mean. I'm just trying not to make too many assumptions haha. From what I've heard, the Lotus seems pretty good but I have to imagine that the McLaren as you said has shown some raw speed straight away. That gap is pretty monstrous in F1 terms.

Jenson's comments on another site suggest that he is more than a little surprised by the pace. True, early times can meaning very little, perhaps the McLaren has significantly improved, or it uses the new tires better, or both. Regardless, a great first day for JB and team.

Actually testing is a very good indication of the car's pace, in 2009 you could tell the Brawn under Button's control was a very fast car hence his title favourite status just before the season and we all knew the Mclaren that year was a dog and this year this Mclaren so far has shown the raw speed syraight out the box just like the Brawndid, its ominous, and Ferrari are the 1's that don't look too clever, maybe its the wind tunnel again??

Generally testing isn't much to go on, but have to say that's an impressive lap from the McLaren, even if it was on fumes. Such a gap is always good. Reliability issues worrying however. No real conclusions to be drawn though I reckon.

Relatively speaking speaking, you can't rely on lap times alone to have a definitive idea on the pecking order.

That said, it's often a good sign to be able to set fast laps. If a contender is languishing 3 seconds adrift, that usually means the car isn't well born...So, Mc Laren and Lotus must be relieved today.

Well, it's a shakedown day really but at least that shows the McLaren is up there and hopefully a fuel pump failure on the first day of testing means that's it for the season. I hope so!
