F1 » Hamilton: I’ll just keep asking for downforce...

Lewis Hamilton says that there is still a lot for him to learn as he gets to grips with life at Mercedes.

The Mercedes package looks quite strong. Whether it will be strong enough only time will tell. It would be nice to have them fighting at the front with RBR, McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus. For spectators it would be a "grande finale" for the V8s.

Midfield driver?

Jenson Button: "Lewis is one of the best qualifiers ever"

Fernando Alonso: "Hamilton is probably the fastest"

Watch his perfomances in Silverstone 2008 and Nurburgring 2011 before blurting out such rubbish.

Nico has a silver square above his visor where the Merc logo is. That's how you quickly differentiate them.

What Lewis could do is putting an union jack inside a circle on the top of his helmet...

Most of the fast laps were set on soft tires -Hamilton's quick lap was set on mediums. Those of you trying to arrange driver and car pecking order based on testing are out on a fools errand. there is real actual testing happening as well sandbagging going on all the place

michael. vettels laps were on mediums, buttons were on "special" hards. as as regards sandbagging??? there are some who habitually make claims that some teams are sandbagging. but NO team can afford to do such a thing. if they were, they would get no useful data. but then again, some teams are using last years wings, or diffusers etc, so as to gain a reference point for the rest of the car.

@richard - what were the hards that JB used?

I really feel this year that Red Bulls number is up. And Ferrari, Lotus & Mclaren are so close it's impossible to predict what will happen in Melbourne. I do think that Mclarens late 2012 dominance will continue, at least in the early races. But with so much to prove, by so many, this is going to be one titanic scrap!

jim. i posted elsewhere, the info that pirelli brought extra tyres to the test. these were tyres requested by the teams and were in addition to the normal race spec tyres. whether it was for testing purposes only, it is not clear. some of these had different colour markings, such as orange etc. buttons car was put on a particular tyre which was rated as "hard" but it turned out that whatever actual compound was being used, it actually gave more grip that the race spec softs! believe it or not!

it does show however, that pirelli, given a free hand, could actually produce a long lasting tyre with superior grip. but the fia, in their wisdom, dont want that.

identification of which tyre set which time was nigh on impossible, but it was macca who spilt the beans on buttons times.
