F1 » Ricciardo: Vettel showed STR win not impossible

Daniel Ricciardo insists that Sebastian Vettel's 2008 race win for Toro Rosso is a motivation not a millstone for his successors.

There will also be those who remember that the year Vettel won that race the STR was really an RBR, except with a Ferrari engine. That made it ideally suited for the circumstances at a wet Monza. His teammate Bourdais was 3rd on the grid...

Not that it wasn't a good performance by Vettel to keep it on track and win his first race but it is in no way comparable with winning for STR now. Vettel happened to be there at the right time and made the most of it.

well, i suppose that mracles can happen! str would need all the top runners to retire before they even get a sniff at a podium. thy need to be in a consistent point scoring position before such comments are made.

neverthelss, i wish them luck for the coming season

vettels race winning red bull with Ferrari engine didn't really look like a race winner at any other point that year, maybe vet tel won that first race because he was 'pushing', the team had to ask him to slow down worrying that he may lose the car in the conditions , and when he pushes he seems able to make a difference

LOL, this has to be the best F1 joke for the year... So is this Ricardo bloke trying to say he's the next Vettel? Very wishful thinking ha ha I wish him good luck but seriously I don't see him performing at the same level as Vettel, needless to mention he is too slooooowwww to win a race... So what, you can't even win in a Red Bull or Ferrari, Ricardo...

blzbub. if memory serves me correctly, seb actually had several good results in the str, that year. and dont forget he was runnng in third when lulu wrong footed webber and vettel.

apart from all that, yes the str wa a redbull clone, however, neither webber or dc could win in the red bull itself

The Toro Rosso might have been a Red Bull clone in 08 but Red Bull was just seventh placed in the championship that year. Also Bourdais started 4., his qualifying lap almost one second slower than Vettels. And he didnt make it back into the points either after his screwed up start.

Outside the top 5 teams i can imagine the Williams drivers and Hulk to win a race, Toro Rossos might get a lucky podium.

@f1 fan

He didn't say anything like that, go back and read the article. All he's doing here is trying to be ambitious and optimistic, like everyone in Formula One - is that so wrong?

Back when Red Bull and Torro Rosso shared technology/research? As I remember, when Vettel won with STR that car was a lot more Red Bull's than it should have been.
