F1 » Ricciardo: Vettel showed STR win not impossible

Daniel Ricciardo insists that Sebastian Vettel's 2008 race win for Toro Rosso is a motivation not a millstone for his successors.

freejack. that is what we have said. the str was a clone of the red bull. at that time it was fully permissible for two teams to run the same chassis, but str used a ferrari engine and red bull used the renault. however, vettel driving the str, beat two star drivers driving the official red bull car.and wasnt he just a teenager then?
yes, he had a better chance to win than ricciardo or vergne have at str. probably seb would not win in the current str, but i reckon that he would do a better job than the two incumbents!

All this talk about the magic "Ferrari" engine and the "It was a Red Bull" is a bunch of ****. The fact is that Sebastian did something that NOONE else has ever done. He took a true backmarker car, put it on pole, and wiped out "The Establishment" in the race. Lets not forget that the Toro Rosso was known as MINARDI just recently before. And lets not forget that Vettel was racing against the likes of Ferrari, McLaren and Renault. Oh and he was a teenager too. Can anyone come up with a similar feat in the last 40 years of F1 racing?

So far, DR and JEV have not had the car to show what they are capable of. I think they may surprise us this year if there is appreciable improvement. Wanting podiums should be every driver's aim, so the guy can't be criticised for saying that. Quite rightly and fairly he uses Seb's previous success in the STR as his inspiration.

Everyone going on about how it was a RB with a Ferrari engine, we saw several times last year, mid-field teams running up near the front. Perez nearly taking Alonso at Malaysia, putting in another two great drives at Canada and Monza (and was looking good at Catalunya, Monaco, Spa and Suzuka before things went wrong). Hulkenberg was doing a pretty good job at Brazil before the turn one incident. Maldonado of course won in Spain. Kamui up on the podium in Japan, with a great quali there, and a great quali at Spa too. With a decent car, it's possible.

@Yak
STR 2008 was not a decent car. It finished 6th in wcc ( thanks to Vettel) out of 10 teams. It had never b4 and has never since won a race in any guise.

"STR used the same shassis as RBR in 2008"

And what did RBR get that year? NOTHING! It was a DOG OF A CAR. Vettel finished ahead of both Mark and David in the final standings.

Why is it so hard to acknowledge the guy's talent and effort? It's not like he got a gift from heaven (or Newey), he's worked his a** off to be in the position he is now.

The site is great! Well done! I heard something about speed and yeah it seems a little slow, but it's formatted so much better that who cares. It is not THAT much slower. Good job Crash.
