I said it earlier on another thread, I truly hope this isn't an attempt by Lewis to grab some PR headlines by going all out on the minimal fuel load but rather a true reflection of a normal attempt on the super soft tyres. It would be nice come Melbourne the Mercedes team still has something up it's sleeve. This would without a doubt put the cat among the pigeons within the F1 paddock.

If you listen to the comments from Rosberg he knows this car is a lot better than last year. Also on Sky, the feeling is Mercedes are very quick. Whether they are the fastest is irrelevant at the moment. I think they will surprise a few people this year

karl. he was on prototype softs, which were faster than the normal super softs. the prototypes were supplied from the romanian factory and were not coded. these tyres are good for only one fast lap, and then they go off by a couple of seconds.

Richard, incorrect. The prototype softs are identical:
@paulhembery: "Hamilton using prototype SOFT for his time. Tyres are identical to 2013 range, just back up production location."

Not to mention that was a 1:21.534.
He set a 1:20.817 on MEDIUMS
and then his fastest a 1:20:558 on marked softs.

austin. no, hembry also said that as they came from a different factory, the compound was not identical. and it was clearly stated that faster times were being obtained than on the normal super softs. several teams also reported this. it could have had something to do with the very low track temp. irrespective, i totally ignore showboating laps as such a pace cannot be maintained over a race distance. a number of cars were able to lap with consistent 21s whereas the merc could only manage a single lap and then tailed off. they appear to be hard on tyres

just some perspective:
Fastest time in testing in 2012 same track -
1'22.030 (kimi)

Fastest time in qualifying in 2012 same track - surprise surprise -
1:21.707 (ham) - but disqualified for stopping on track (running on fumes)

his time today in testing 1:20.588

whether it is a 1 hit wonder or not, it is fast and times like this will get pole....consistency on race day is different story !
