Felipe Massa feels he can be a contender in 2013 on the back of a solid start to the new F1 season

I am just thinking, if in case Alonso's bad luck leads to a stint of DNFs and Massa gets legs on him in points table, will Ferrari still keep using him to help Alonso gather points? What will be the tipping point, if any....

@pizzaboy: As far as the team is concerned there probably is a tipping point, look at Schuey-Irvine '99 or (to a lesser extent as back then they 'didn't have team orders') Raikkonen-Massa '08.

I'm just wondering how FA will react to it if it would happen. Will he still be talking about how Ferrari is bigger than the drivers or does that only apply when he is the favoured one?

Schuey (surprisingly) played ball and so did Raikkonen, but somehow I don't see FA doing the same.

I'm a bit surprised by the over-confidence of Alonso. Given that he is a good driver, but how can he be very confident that he can easily re-claim the deficit. All it needs is another couple of DNFs either because of car trouble or someone else mistake and if 2 other drivers (namely Vettel or Raikkonen) get some consecutive podium/wins, he will have lot of catching up to do. In the meantime if Massa scores couple of 12 point finishes, he will be 30 points or so ahead. I still remember he covered 40-point deficit in 2010 to lead WDC in the last race. But I doubt if it can happen every time as the teams are more competitive now (there were 3 good teams then, now there are 5 if and when mclaren becomes competitive).

Alonso is confident because he belives in himself and his abilities more than any other driver on the grid. For many years he said that he doesn't need the fastest car to win the title but one which is able to challenge the very best. I believe that the only driver that Alonso feared during his entire career was Michael Schumacher from 2003 to 2006. At that time he was the only who really could beat Alonso in the same equipment. At the moment Alonso is the most completed driver and the only one he fears in F1...is not a driver....is Adrian Newey.

@Firestorm. I did mention that Alonso is an exceptional driver. But in F1 many times we saw a driver alone cannot make everything fall in place. Ask Hamilton about last year. The team can fail him or the car or some other driver could hit him in first few laps. So it is one thing to feel confident, but another thing to proclaim that it can be done easily. Anyway, we will see how it goes. I still think if Mercedes and McLaren improve, Alonso will find it difficult. Lotus and Kimi are the other unknowns.

Sorry Massa, I think your day of being on the top of the game enough to be the champ have passed you by. You would need an exceptional car, well ahead of the competition, which you don't have, and a very submissive partner which you don't have. You are excellent at a number two driver now, ride the curve, enjoy the rest of your F1 career and be happy..

Obviously Massa has a chance. He didn't say he was going to win, only that he had a chance. Every driver on the top 4 has a realistic chance... I don't understand why so many people find that hard to understand.

He has proven that, given the circumstances, he can play witht he best best of them. Yes, he had 3 really bad years after that, no one is disputing that. But he has show a LOT of improvement and, at the moment, I see no reason to doubt him.

I hope he can out qualify FA next race as well, it will start to get under the Spanish's skin (if it hasn't already) and that's something Massa could use.

Alonso is a great driver because he believes in himself, you take a little bit of that away and we have what we saw when he was at McLaren all over again.
