"Can Ma return kick-start Chinese F1 interest?"

No

He managed to finish last in his first GP2 race after qualifying 19th and last in practice. He may have won a domestic 1.6 touring car championship but that is hardly likely to excite a nation. Autosport rate him number 2212 in the world - the lowest of any Chinese driver in any series.

Alonso stirred up a nation by winning. Will the Chinese be excited and proud of a back end driver and flock to the barely used solitary F1 race track?
I have my doubts.

If he'd be able to beat or even come close to the regular Caterham drivers, maybe, but in reality he was 1.5s slower than vd Garde...

I doubt the Chinese will be cheering on a driver who is really only there because of sponsorship money. It's a poor joke already that he's signed to race in GP2 this year, the guy has less results behind his name than Gaston Mazzacane.

Not while he has hole in his ar*e. Jeez, this guy makes Max Chilton look like Alain Prost! I'm sure China will one day be able to field a competitive driver but their motorsport scene will need to evolve a lot more to produce any quality.
