F1 » F1 Bahrain 2013: Alonso could have fought for win - Ferrari

Ferrari: This is definitely not the outcome we expected after showing all weekend long that we were capable of fighting for the top places.

True. Alonso held the fastest lap as well before Vettel took at the end for fun, and Alonso's time was only 0.2 slower without DRS even though it was set some 14 laps before. Pretty certain he could have gone faster if he was not in the Webber Hamilton Perez battle, so he had the speed..

Yes he had the pace.... but Ferrari have thrown away around 35 points from Alonso due to their silliness in here and Malaysia.
Fernando should have had atleast 2 wins and podiums in all 4 and be leading, instead he is in 4th.

Before the season Ferrari said how important the first five races were to the outcome of the championship. It's good to put on a brave face and look forward but you can not expect other teams to make as many errors as your team over the season. That's an excuse not a strategy. Ferrari seem so relaxed, like they have the better car which they don't, and are just waiting for the percentages to catch up. It didn't work out for them last season and it won't this season if they aren't perfect at every race.

I think Alonso did a great job to get 8th. However, why do these articles keep insisting that he had 2 extra stops? Unless he was on a 2 stop strategy (very unlikely, as the Ferrari hasn't been easy on the tires), the first stop included a tire change off of the mediums and took maybe an extra second or two to close the wing flap. The first stop was probably several laps before he wished to put, but otherwise wasn't that devastating.

The second stop after making the choice to open the wing flap again (arguably not a smart choice), cost him enough to put him into 5th place at minimum and a loss of 6 points minimum.

@slightlysideways, I don't think it operates on a stationary car. Not sure.
Also Alonso committed the mistake first in Malaysia, people conveniently forget that and blame Ferrari for the aftermath. So the only points gifted by Ferrari was in Bahrain. You can say it was 1 driver mistake and 1 team mistake this season in 4 races!
