F1 » War of words over tyre wear heats up

After the pit stop frenzy in Barcelona, it seems everyone had a view on Pirelli's 2013 tyre compounds. And by no means everyone wants to see changes.

jim. not as much nonsense as you might think! when hembery says that rbr have the fastest car and would sail away if the tyres lasted longer. last year, there were several rule changes made to try and slow down the bulls but when other teams innovated, there was nothing done to the rules. it is interesting to see that f1 cars, the "pinnacle" of motor sport, were actually lapping SLOWER than gp2 cars. and then there was di resta, asking what on earth was the situation, and even lulu, when told to drive slower to protect the tyres, said that if he did, he would be at walking pace.

a race should be won by speed, not by going as slowly as possible. unless something is done to tyre compounds, then this yeard championship will be a farce.

as I said, even Pirelli accept that it is a farce and he requirements must (and will) change. their reputation has been severely damaged and they are considering pulling out. and which company would want their reputation destroyed?

Richard, yes, Pirelli have to be careful, and I hope they don't pull out. Anyone with half a brain will know that they're only doing what they've been asked to do but perception is everything and it's not a good situation for them. I know I bang on about 2010 but I'm still confused as to why all these changes were made since then. The re-introduction of KERS, the introduction of DRS and then these tyres. If Bernie would have had his way we'd have also got 'fake rain' by now!

Turn the clock back 3 years in terms of regulations and I'd be happy (even happier if they bought back the V10s, but that's another argument entirely)!

I reckon the tire situation is fine. they all have to deal with the same tire spec so get on with it. Otherwise it's aerodynamics that rules the racing and that's equally boring, just more expensive for the teams. And RED BULL should SUFFER anyway. Vettel is a brat, and it will be interesting to see for how long he can hold it together if his car is not automatically the best.

Richard - Couple of points..

1. Do we need Hembery's approval to know that Red Bull got a faster car? They have been faster, if not fastest for the last 3-4 years.. with and with our Pirelli tyres. I see Hembery as a failure who failed to comply with F1's demand to make tires to have Spanish Grand Prix work with 2-3 stops! He should keep his mouth shut and log off from twitter and focus on his job!
2. Last year rules were changed - NOT to slow down any car. Rules were clarified and made tighter when ever Red Bull found a loop hole and took advantage of it. Some observers feels that the RB cars at such stage were illegal too!
3. I agree F1 is pinnacle of motor sports, drivers need to compete, not worry about preserving tires etc etc! Its been the same case 2-3 years now! And at least in Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso did flat out racing.. and did less of "conserving", while others including RB tried to do in 3 stops!
4. Finally on the normally quiet man, mateschitz.... He was enjoying the

4. Finally on the normally quiet man, mateschitz.... He was enjoying the show all these years when RB was winning on that Pirelli. Now some teams designed their cars to "suit better" or "run faster" with these pirelli's, the poor rich dude need to come out defending his team.. Quite normal!

Richard, be assured that I am not supporting the current tyres, what I am supporting is those teams that got their car design right for the use of the current tyres which everybody is racing on and I will reiterate that regardless of what you call a majority of posters/sites including the RBR boss are saying it is not right or fair on these teams that are managing the tyres ok to move the goal posts, what is the right thing to do is for RBR and Mercedes to improve their car's use of the current tyres.
It was a surprise reading you saying that the rules were changed during a season, a rule can only be changed during a season on safety grounds, what was done was clarifications of some rules forced on the FIA by RBR not only being totally border line but going well over that line of rules interpretations.

Leave the tires alone until the middle of the season so we can see if red Bull can cope or overcome their issues. If after that point in the season the tires are changed and Red Bull come back to life so to speak then we'll all know that the fix is in.Its pretty sad for Red Bull to be the loudest whiners when they don't have vettel disappearing at the front of the field. How come Mr M does not complain about the "racing" then.
Granted the tire wear is a little extreme but some teams are dealing with it with good results.
If old Adrian is such a genius then he needs to get his finger out and sort out the issues.
Heaven forbid we return to the days when Ferrari had tires designed purely for their cars-----Red Bull cant have that sort of clout can they?.

What F1 heads have asked Pirelli to built is obviously idiotic... But changing mid season the tires is an unfair advantage for Red Bull and Merc. Ferrari and Lotus have built their cars to be gentle with the tires they were given and now they will have to rebuilt them scratch. And again I say i don't like the whole masquerade of dissolving tire management

If the Bulls go on to win everything after the tire change it will surely look as if the changes were made to suit their car. RB had the opportunity to update their car to be easier on the tires just as all the other teams did. The fact that they race to preserve their tires is not the fault of the other teams. As the Iceman intimated, why don't they just go racing?
