F1 » Pirelli hints at ‘lock it or lose it’ ultimatum to F1 teams


Pirelli has suggested that it could pull out of F1 if a new contract cannot be quicky agreed with the teams.

Usually Bernie that plays brinksmanship, quite funny to see an F1 supplier doing it.

Rubber just masks the issue that these cars have to much downforce and without the cheese tyres and Kers/DRS it's pretty much impossible to pass.

Too much downforce isn't an issue. having a car stick to the road so it can be thrown around with confidence will only add to the excitement and racing.

What IS the problem is the cars are not fast enough to overtake anything. There would be no need for KERS or DRS if the engine rev limit was scrapped - actually have a power plant that can make a fast car.

@Shakey ... I in full, 100% agrrement with every single word of your post.

We were told that limiting the revs was to increase engine life, and save money! ... but then told that developing KERS / DRS / DDRS etc would cost $30m (conservatively) and thats almost three years (at the current V8 charge structure) engine supply for a mid based team ...

I'm with you Shakey, scrap engine homologation, scrap rev limits of a paltry 18k RPM, go back to 04/05 rubber compounds and lets get the "R" back in RACING! ... plus, 2007 aero levels and designs, big wings and refueling!, OK, maybe not! :-)

Pirelli are only producing what they are asked to produce. In fact the F.I.A have forbidden them to change the compounds of this years tyres. They are dammed if they o dammed if they don't . If I was pirelli I'd pull out anyway. The way they have been treated by some of the teams in the media is despicable

stephengreen - I agree with everything you have said. Pirelli are only doing as they have been instructed to do and are working to their objectives. I feel for them too.

I do think we have a big problem in F1 now as it is not a race of best driver and machine but a race of strategies. Tyre management has always been in racing and will always be. This is a tricky one to sort out because if we were to go back to long lasting sticky rubber would we just see the qualifying results as the race results? I dont know either.

I do know this - I want to see cars racing again taken to the limit with the fastest driver in the best engineered car win the race. I dont care for this DRS rubbish this is artificial. KERS is okay in my view as everybody has it and the driver (or team) can choose when to deploy and it has brought benefits to road cars.

Lets hope for a good fair race in Monaco and lots of racing and great wheel to wheel action come Canada.
