@whitew - if you think that Nico's win at Monaco was because of the data gained at Pirelli's test then I wonder how much you really know about the sport. Mercedes have been good qualifiers this year. The nature of the Monaco track allowed them to control the pace and limit tire degradation. Remind me how they did at Canada, a more typical F1 track.

The emails from Charlie appeared to be collusion in looking for a "loophole". I was not aware that the FIA delegates were allowed to point out or recommend loopholes. Unlike the Ferrari test Merc were not running their own program. Even if it is only a young drivers test they will lose valuable data by not participating. In my opinion this was a just decision.

I'm not saying the rules allow current drivers. They don't. But there is this ridculous carve out for Pirelli to test without the same rigour of definitiion within it. So there's a grey area there and Mercedes interpreted it to their advantage as much as possible. And then Charlie said it was OK. Given the same approval i can't imagine any team that would have done differently. The FIA screwed this up big time in my book by giving a team permission to get away with something that "everyone knows is wrong" but might not technically be illegal. It's a farce.

Speaking of, does anyone else find it unbelievable that Pirelli is expected to develop tires without extensive testing using the very machines they are intended for. I wish they just allow one "tire" test for each team during the year or a general test milage limit with some percentage to be used for tire testing.
