F1 » Raikkonen: Lotus must keep trying

Kimi Raikkonen: Of course, we wanted to win but today we didn't have the speed. [Overall] it was a good day for the team though - we are getting back to where we should be

Everyone is fooled when Vettel paces the last 10 laps to conserve tires and/or fuel when being pursued seriously. Kimi was facing the usual issue. Everyone else that tried to run 35-36 laps on mediums lost 2s per lap on the last 7-8 laps of the race. That would have put Kimi further back than he finished with 17 lap (11 race on 6 lap old) softs. This was not a race that was going to be won on strategy alone.

Meh...I'd personally liked to have seen them try to run till the end of the race. Yes other cars had some big degradation towards the end so maybe he wouldn't have made it but think about it this way: the worst he could have done realistically if he failed to make it to the end and pit say 4 laps before the end was 4th or MAYBE 5th. Then Lotus would have been 2nd with Grosjean and 4/5th in the worst case scenario with Kimi, but they would have also have had a real shot at victory and to take points from Vettel.

I think they should take every chance to take points from Seb cause he's running away with this championship as is and Newey will only make that car better as the season goes on. Instead they made a conservative call...:(

The Lotus pace today bodes well for them in these summer races yet to come though, seems like high temp ensures they're right at the front.

Also, for a few minutes there I thought Lotus had a stroke of genius pitting Grosjean which put RBR on the spot and I thought RBR made the same mistake Ferrari did in 2010 with FA in Abu Dhabi when RBR themselves pitted Webber and Ferrari immediately covered Webber by stopping FA which sadly for them dropped FA back behind the Renaults and gave Seb the championship.

But then Kimi pitted...Can't help but feel Lotus should have won today one way or another, but I guess you have to give credit to Seb in this case because they didn't.
