F1 » Nasr in Toro Rosso frame?

Antonio Felix da Costa may not be the only candidate to fill Daniel Ricciardo's seat at Toro Rosso should the Australian move on for 2014.

Nasr's a fantastic driver. First saw him in Singapore 2009, came into BMW Asia as a guest driver for that weekend and won both races. Been following his career since then. He's too good to be chewed up and spat out by one of the bottom teams, it'd be good to have him in a car that could fight for points.

Meh....Not really convinced. In his rookie year in GP2 he was with the title winning Dams team but his performances paled in comparison to Valsecchi's. Ok so it was his rookie year but this year again, he has been consistent but if I'm not mistaken he's still yet to win a race this year.

As they say you can learn consistency but you can't learn outright pace.

Anyway I don't see someone outside of the RB family take up that seat, they're probably gonna go with Felix da Costa despite his current 5th place in WSBR or go the Alguersuari route and thow someone like Carlos Sainz jr in there and hope for the best.

Last time they went for an outsider it was Bourdais and that didn't turn out to well either. I'm sure it'd be an uphill battle with the likes of Marko around who wants to see one of his protegees in the car.

JJJ. With all due respect you sound like someone reading stats rather than a regular GP2 viewer. For a young kid who's only in his second GP2 season he's doing phenomenally well taking the fight to drivers who have been chugging around since 2009. Make no mistake, GP2 is tough on newcomers, there are a lot of veterans there who know the car, know the teams, know the drill and will dominate rookies, just like Valsecchi. He was competing his sixth season when paired with Nasr at DAMS.

Take a look at all the GP2 champions since 2008 and you'll notice something in common. They all took four or more seasons to win the title, with the exception of Hulkenberg who incredibly won it in his first season.

Mate, if you're not convinced that a driver like Nasr deserves a shot at F1, you've got some unreasonably high standards. What do you think of Chilton? VDG? Gonzalez?

@FC

I know GP2 is tough in the sense that if you're not in the right team at the right time even good drivers can look decidedly average. I also watch most races either via live stream or recap on TV. I think Nasr is doing well but I'd like to see more pace. You get the sense that even his teammate Palmer, when he is on it (Hungary) has more pace eventhough he has much less points.

As for vdG I think he's pretty good and showed just about enough in GP2 after winning WSBR to be in F1. Gonzalez though? Seriously? VdG thrashed him as his teammate.

Chilton probably should have stuck with GP2 for another year. He wasn't that good at the beginning of last year's season but turned it around a bit in the end. The 4th place was a bit fortuitous though IMO. I don't know if the thinking was that it wouldn't get any better than that in GP2 or if it's just a matter of taking the F1 chance when it comes, but now Jules Bianchi had pretty much destroyed Chilton's chances of being regarded as a bonafide F1 talent, barring another miraculous turnaround from Chilton. It's hindsight of course, but he may have been better off honing his skills in GP2 another year.
