Both Schumacher and Alonso are great drivers, is difficult to say who is better. The only time that they had similar performing cars, they annahilated the rest of the field winning 7 races each and finishing many points ahead of every other driver. This happened in 2006, a classic fight between the two drivers which I believe that are amongst the 5 or 6 best drivers in F1 history.

IF is a big word at times but barring just a few pivotal incidents Alonso would be a 5 time champion by now and people would be talking of him as one of the greatest ever.

Examples,

IF McLaren inflated his tyres correctly at China 2007
IF Ferrari hadn't shadowed Webber at Abu Dhabi 2010.
If Gro Jo hadn't tried to decapitate him at Spa 2012.

3 Things all out with his control that arguably cost him World Championships. I can't think of too many other drivers that have been that close to 5 WDC's.

felipe knows first hand about them, performing to a level of a mere 9 out of 10 in one area on any one weekend will see fernando or michael in front, alonso's engineer said something similar last year. bringing kimi back will raise the bar to at least 9.5

Taipan,
I usually agree with you, but "close enough" only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades.
And Flip,
Its time for you to move on, son. You just ain't the same Flip you were before your accident. But thank you for the memories.
And for the record,
Michael Schumacher holds all the records. Not Ferdi Alonso.

ty. don't fall into the "wot ifs" trap! in each of those years other drivers also had problems that possibly denied them the title too. the only "stat" that mtters is the points at the end of the season.
not denying that ferdi is good, but he did not mould a team around himself like schumi did. he doesn't have the temperament to do so.

I guess that schumi wont be competing in flips karting event this winter!
