I don't believe this is as clearcut as it appears, there are rumours that there is unrest at Mclaren and if turns out to be true and Whitmarsh goes then Button's place might just be up for grabs. The problem for Mclaren is that no top drivers are available so they might decide hang on to Button to see what happens at Ferrari next season. Alonso back to Mclaren for 2014, not such a longshot as it might appear!

I really don't see why the team would want to get rid of Button considering that it's him that is pushing the team forward right now. Besides, perhaps Honda want Button in the team when they start supplying engines to McLaren, who knows.

One thing is for sure, if Perez ends up as the no.1 driver in the wake of Button leaving then the team is right up poop creek.

There is definitely something going on in my opinion, just read this on the BBC Sport page:

McLaren's managing director Jonathan Neale hopes he will soon be in a position to confirm their drivers for next season:

"We don't comment on the rumour mill on the recruitment of our drivers until such a time that we are ready to make an announcement," he said.

"I can't tell you when but obviously it won't be too much further now until when we are able to clarify what's going on."

If they are planning on keeping the same line up, surely they would say so?

i think part of the problem is that Vodafone are pulling out, and are also in the throes of being taken over by Verizon. so maybe there are discussions with telmex, and this would mean perez staying on? if macca do not need telmex money, they could be open to attracting the hulk, or massa. button has been handicapped by the lousy car this year, yet is still staying out of trouble and getting the points. all teams suffer off years and macca is in one of those this year. who knows how good or bad next ears car will be? in my opinion, macca should continue with a know driver as this will be the best way to assess their new car

A one year extension suits McLaren, Fernando might be available at the end of next year. Can't imagine that would happen but didn't imagine Kimi going back to Ferrari, money talks and Honda have lots.

They need to take on a junior driver. Yes its a gamble but all great drivers have to come from somewhere. Button has nothing to bring to the table (only plenty to actually take from it!!!)

Button is one of the lucjkiest men in F1 gets paid a fortune and is no better than a number 2 driver. I think his days at a top team are numbered. There are much beter value young drivers around now and I think this is now what Mclaren needs to drive this team forward
