I do wish Button would button up if you will excuse the pun! Both Button and Whitmarsh are always banging on about what they need to do to improve, clearly they started out in a bad place and have stayed there all season which rather suggests that they don't know what they have to do at all. Hopefully Ross Brawn will come on board and start to put things right, meanwhile I suggest that both Button and Whitmarsh shut up and put up.

Anyway McLaren still has a problem about next year car. It still will be a customer team to Mercedes, and building a strong and efficient engine is does not mean everything. You need to adapt your chassis to the engine and other systems, is about weight distribution, about center of gravity. Mercedes won't give McLaren every detail about their engines, in order to prevent Honda from copying them. In 2014 the pecking order can change but I doubt that the customer teams will beat their respective manufacters. Red Bull will be ahead of every Renault powered team, as Ferrari will be ahead of Sauber and Marussia and the same will happen with the Mercedes powered teams. That's I look it for the moment.

In 2009, Honda made Brawn chassis and it was made for a Honda engine. In the end Brawn ended with Merc. engine (with a few modifications on the chassis) and won the World Championship.

From 2006 to 2013 we had an engine freeze rule in F1 with a temporary unfreeze only for Renault in order to close their deficit. So engine performance was similar for all engines at the time including BMW, Honda and Toyota which now has gone. So the changes in 2009 were about aerodynamics in general, with slick tyres and KERS in additional. So it was a great chance for every team and Brawn and Red Bull exploitet it. Now the major changes are mechanical and the engine manufacters should have an advantage over their customer teams.

JB, We know what you need. A great aero man (coming in a year), a great team leader (Brawn coming next year) and a great engine (Honda is coming in a year). I wonder about the Mercedes engine for next year, at least the ones McLaren will receive. The team has dumped Mercedes and now stolen Brawn. Hopefully Mercedes doesn't allow this to influence the quality of the product supplied to McLaren.

Mercedes can't give McLaren a dodgy engine, as all Merceredes engines (including the works teams) are distributed by the FIA.

Also Mercedes can hardly complain about poaching giving they signed Paddy Lowes months ago.

But your first two sentences I fully agree with
