F1 » Teams fear more 'dull' one-stoppers if Pirelli play safe in 2014

The focus at the start of the season was on tyres that were too difficult to cope with, but now teams fear that Pirelli may play too safe in 2014 and races could become too static and dull.

3+ stops per race? Too boring!
1-2 stops per race? Too boring!

Personally, I actually preferred the 3+ stop races this year as they added more emphasis upon strategy which can allow mid to back of the pack drivers to outperform their car.

Harder tyres and a lack of a decent DRS zone just highlights the fact that the reliance on aero is ruining F1 and has been for yonks.

At least engine reliability and performances will spice things up for a little while but that'll equalise before the end of the season.

I remember when Jeff Willis once said that F1 didn't need overtaking, what a spanner.

It all seems to go from one extreme to the other with Pirelli. Recently we had tyres that were f****d after 5 laps, then on Sunday 40 laps were no problem.

How about something in between?

So the teams complained they wore out too fast, and are now complaining that they last too long.

And to say that the spectacle of racing should be in the pit stops shows just how lost this series is!

Make cars that can follow other cars, slip stream and overtake naturally and maybe the spectacle will be back without faking it with DRS, tyres with poor degradation etc.

The teams should be supplying the entertainment, not the tyre company...

Well I have been an avid watcher and follower of F1 since 1964, and Sunday nights show I turned off the TV, before the race was on in Austin. I had seen all I needed to see in qualifying the evening before.

Well done Pirelli and the FIA, there is no more real racing any more. The last real racing was 1990 to 2000, not bad till 2005, and then it just deteriorated.

Sad, Very Sad !!!!!!!

The number of stops is almost an irrelevance. What would make for far better (or more entertaining) racing would be to get rid of all the aero rubbish on the cars.

Think back to pre-wings & things - you'd have slipstreaming, out-braking, and OVERTAKING!!! We could also visibly see cars on the limit and drifting in a corner.

I know it won't happen, for all sorts of reasons, both political and practical, but I can wish can't I??

A Lotus 49, constructed from modern materials with the current safety requirements, but "naked" - that would be a car to watch...
