F1 » Alonso: We need to do better in 2014

Fernando Alonso: I realised we would not win the championship around Germany or Hungary as we were too far off Red Bull in terms of competitiveness and the Silverstone update didn't work well enough.

I would have thought that was blindingly obvious. The big problem is that everyone needs to do a lot better, especially Mclaren if Redbull are not to walk away with a fifth consecutive championship. There are far too many teams underperforming, I'm sure thay will all say it's the lack of money but you don't need to have limitless money to produce a good car witness Brawn in 2009.

Alonso will need to up his game. The days are over for him regarding having a number 2 driver who will automatically jump out of the way for him. Look what happened the last time someone refused to be his number 2 (Hamilton),, he threw his toys out of the pram like a little spoilt child

You guys are oversimplifying it. The whole McLaren team was against Alonso to the extent that the FIA had to put an observer in their garage to make sure that FA's car was not being tampered with. Hamilton had a great run in the first half of his rookie season until the pressure got to him. And he was no saint either. He wanted team orders to be used in Monaco and he got them out of pit stop sequence order in the Hungary qualifying that year which led to FA taking his time leaving the pits. This is still the only time that I can recall a driver being penalized for an issue with a teammate. This most likely cost Alonso the WDC.
