Its sad, but I hope he at least gets his food & board paid for :)

That said, its nice to see a driver valuing his desire to win over money. Unlike a certain Mercedes driver paid nearly double his team mate and isn't nearly twice as fast.....

Maybe my English is lacking, but nowhere in the article either one is saying he is driving for free. All it says is that he offered to drive for free.

In fact you could argue Fernandez is insinuating he is paying Kobayashi out of his own pocket.

In this world way too much human behavior is motivated by money and not nearly enough by passion. It's a sad situation when an enterprise that pays multi-millions to business freaks can't pay a decent salary to those who make it all possible. Having said that, bravo to you, Kobayashi, for following your dream.
