Tony Fernandes admits Heikki Kovalainen's results for Lotus at the end of 2013 played a part in Caterham not picking him for a race seat this season

Gotta feel a bit for Heikki there - just goes to show how difficult it is now to be parachuted into a new car and deliver, even for someone of his experience. That said, he's had a fair crack at the whip over the years and driven some decent machinery. I thought he'd annihilate Petrov in 2012 but it didn't happen. Probably time to move on to sportscars.

I'd say it killed his chances, not just hurt them.

I thought he'd do a lot better.

I'd agree his time in F1 is probably up now unless he gets a test driver gig elsewhere..

fourteenseven: im sure kamui's cash helped ease fernandes mind in the choice too.

£1 million is a drop in the bucket for any F1 team. So I don't think the money played as much as some people are to believe. Fernandes spoke of "that glint in Kamui's eye" in other words, his passion for racing and wanting to compete and be successful was much stronger than Kovalainen's.. And I think thats the real reason he was picked.

What I don't understand is that Kamui had reportedly secured closer to 8 million euro before the 2013 season, much of it being sponsorship... But that so far hasn't been translated to Caterham.. Unless those reports were false to begin with...

Its shame Kovi missed the change. Not saying he is one of the greats of F1 but I think hes good midfield runner. Jumping in new car for last 2 races of season is not easy. Just ceep in mind what he did with that Lotus on first sessions on each raceweekend, but when others were able to change setup and go quicker, he wasnt able to do that. It was big risk to accept Lotus offer and this time it didnt pay off. Shame to say Heikkis career in F1 is over when likes of Chilton gets to keep hes seat.

And what comes with Kobayasis 1mil didnt make any difference, it think it makes pretty huge differnce. 1 mil in 60-70mil budjet is pretty big deal, especially if driver drives for free on top of that money. Still happy they chose Kobayashi instead of someone with no talent and more money.

Shame... he was "excused" the poor finish in Austin by Lotus admitting to debris in the sidepods, strategy error, bad set-up etc., but in Brazil he just didn't seem to have any pace except for one overtake (which Brundle commented on positively).. seemed to give up halfway through the race.
Also, CA was earlier on speaking about the non-racing work of a driver (ie media/PR / interviews etc) and I think they liked the market-ability of KK over Kovy. Certainly, KK has a big fan base still and seems equally (if not more) popular, so I think that also was "in the mix" . Apparently, there was an "issue" with Kovy preferring golf to PR work !
Still can't figure it out... Kovy was wow-ing everyone with his practise & qualy speed, but come the race.......???
