I believe this is a deal between the FIA and McLaren to avoid further damage. McLaren have apologised, no doubt their fine will never be paid and the spy saga is closed. This will be proven in time when the FIA drops its case against the Sunday Times and Martin Brundle. It is not as simple as McLaren accepting culpability, paying up and the FIA being right - franly it has been aterrible episode - one to be ashamed of.

could be right Mark but I suspect with all the public opinion against him, and Mclaren on it,s Knees..might have been a step too far, but rules are rules and he was just doing his job which we now know

As Whitmarsh says in his letter, the whole thing could have been avoided if Ron Dennis had told Jean Todt about Stepney back in March.

Probably the last thing Max wanted to do was spend six months on this but what choice did he have? You can't just sweep something like this under the carpet. That he moved to shut the whole thing down within hours of McLaren confessing shows there is no anti-Ron campaign in the FIA.

By Olympics standards, McLaren could have been facing a lengthy ban for lying to the governing body.

Good. Now let's get to racing and the 2008 season!

First on order: let's develop some quickshift and fast-fill doogamajiggers.

Then kick some but!!

Go McMerc!!!
