The longer stop was not necessarily to run longer, but maybe just as long as Kubica and Raikkonen. Clearly Hamilton was on a lighter fuel load for the first stint, given his pace in qualifying, his pace at the beginning of the race, not to mention his softer tires while Kubica and Raikkonen were on the harder tires. It''s not sure if the advantage Hamilton held before the safety car would have been enough, since he had only pulled away a couple of seconds and Kubica and Raikkonen were beginning to lap faster than him.
So McLaren needed to put more fuel in to be equal in fuel at least, they had no option. Than Hamilton chose the right car for him to crash into, championship winning move.

They might of chose to hit Kimi for a better chance at the title but don't discount Robert Kubica now!

JJ you're right about Shamilton's fuel levels and soft tyres giving him the edge in the first 15 laps but the truth was Kimi was hauling him in and Kubica was starting to match him and both had more fuel and a slower tyre to start of with, the lead was only 6 sec after 17 laps and if Kimi wasn't held up behind Kubica for 2-3 laps like he was the lead would maybe be about 3-4 seconds so Kimi definitely was the quickest guy out there!

when Kimi done Sham in the pits he was on course to win the race with Robert and Sham fighting out for 2nd, shame we couldn't see a good fight.

Good of McLaren to come to their senses and not say, it's not fair for Hamilton to get penalty when Raikkonen didn't after hitting Sutil in Monaco. Other people might have said that!

Yes having to chose between two evils, then the victim had to be Raikonen. Nontheless, this has also put Robert into contention and with the emergence of Fernando's Regie' to give a twist to the results (all going well, no breakdowns and no spin outs), final outcomes and results might be unknown up to the end of the season.
McLaren do not have a foot to stand on in as far as disputing the penalty is concerned.
The red light was on: two cars were stopped at the exit: they had warned Lewis about the red light: what argument could they have brought forward???
I think they should thank their lucky stars for not being totally disqualified fom the next race which was a fairer penalty to pay.

Hamilton seems to be making a habit of stupid mistakes. It could dog him his career.

Hey Lex, calm down mate.Thank god you have no power in F1,otherwise Hamilton would be banned for the rest of season.
Why did the safety car come out in first place, when later in the race, there were worse crashes with no safety car deployed??
then to open the pits at one end and have the red lights on the other doesnt make sense.
Hamilton was wrong, but come on he hasnt committed a crime?
Maybe Lex,you would ban Raikkonon for life because of his stupidity at Monaco aswell??
would you ban Alonso for his bumper car driving at Monaco too????

pagoda, lex is partly right but RD says they did NOT warn lulu about light. there was no need to. he knew there was a light at end of pit road!
last year, massa was black flagged for passing the red light, so it is considered to be very important. had lulu not used kimi as a brake, he would have passed over the line anyway and would have been black flagged. ignoring of red light is a serious safety issue and a severe penalty is warranted. lulu got away lightly.

Whitmarsh says.."Clearly, with the overwhelming majority of the cars pitting at the same time, the pit-lane was unusually congested and, as a result, Lewis not only had to monitor the two cars ahead of him, but also keep an eye on the red lights at the pit exit," he reasoned. WHAT! this sounds like normal driving scenario in any major capital city at peak hour. Even us non F1 mortals have to look out for a lot more other cars inside and out at about 80-100KMH and stop at red lights. This accident happend in the pits a restricted speed area and not at race pace. No excuse for it and as RICH ARD posted about the penalty 'he got away lightly'.
