Speaking as someone who spent some years with no fixed abode, I had a bit of a grin for a while after I heard Brundle say it. I also worked in the road construction industry for a while! Was I offended By the comment? No, not in the slightest, and neither I am sure would any of my friends or former co workers. This is just utter PC bull from people who take it upon themselves to fight meaningless causes for people they will never have any contact with!

Completly agree with Tony King.
Its political correctness gone mad. As has already been mentioned the word pikey doesn't specify any race, and is therefore not racism. A sample of the BBC report reads :

" A "small number" of people had contacted the network after Sunday's broadcast, an ITV spokesman said. "

I can only assume that the "small number" of people are morons and associate pikeys with eastern europeans which makes them racist, not MB. It was said in jest anyway, i wish the british public would lighten up.

The terms that you're suggesting there are actually racial terms, whereas personally I see the term 'pikey' as more of a lifestyle choice than a race! For example a pikey could come from any ethnic origin and therefore cannot be exclusive to a race.....for example you can't exactly call the term lazy, racist as it could be used on anybody from any racial background. In my humble opinion if someone thinks the term 'pikey' is racist, then I'm afraid that person seems to have a pre-conception that people of a certain ethnic origin are all pikeys....and that to me sounds more like racism.

Rant over lol!

Come to think of it, I bet Brundle himself has spent more time over the years living in the back of a van at race tracks around europe than I have! They didn't have these fancy multi million pound motor homes years ago, and still dont in lower classes of racing! So Brundle offended himself! And just about every other racing driver who spent half there life in a caravan in a field by a track. Its good to know the Equality and Human Rights Commission are calling for his head on his behalf!

Well that just about sums up where we are today in Britain. Martin was joking. It was humour. The reference would be a take on the fact that ordinary people in Britain do get offers of a cheap Tarmac job from people who are not skilled in drive / road building. Sometimes these are people who live in caravans trying to earn a couple of pounds in something they are not trained in. I am fed up, we have lost the right to free speech in the UK. People can call me what they like I do not care. Why do we allow the authorities to dictate to us in this way. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be entitled to free speech. This is petty and stupid.

Who are the guys that turn up at your door and want to tarmac your driveway for you ??
They definately are not "Highway Engineers", I will admit some are the genuine article, but most are fly by night "pikeys". Maybe Martin has had some of these at his door lately and used a direct refference.

The world is too PC and "fat jack" is right.

Further erosion of free speech. Did any "Pikey''s" complain or was it just the racial watchdog? Who was actually offended? I don''t even remember him saying it. A complete non-event blown out of proportion.
