I think Audi and the other big manufacturers stay away from F1 because they dont want to be subject to the whims of a madman like Max Moseley. Switching to the mandatory V8 a few years ago cost the teams a fortune, and it was done in the name of "cost savings." Plus, I doubt they would appreciate being forced to use the "standard ECU" manufactured by McLaren. Audi still sells a lot of cars, without the headaches that F1 would undoubtedly bring.

F1 » Audi adamant F1 is 'still not an issue'

Audi downplays rumours linking it to an F1 entry - possibly in conjunction with Red Bull - notwithstanding staggering Le Mans success.

As i said a little while back, it would be good if Audi/VW entered Formula one and saved a team from going out of business.
In recent years Williams seems to be the only privateer that survives in Formula one!
I wish Audi or someone like that went with Minardi.

it would be good if they all left and took bernie with them, was loads better racing and circuits back in the "Cosworth kitcar" days

If they are spending that much money they may as well be in F1.

Got to agree Jonov I don't think Audi needs F1. They sell a lot of cars and have a great reputation. Enterting F1 hasn't done Honda a lot of good so far...

I'd have to disagree with a lot of the comments so far. Honda has gone leaps and bounds since they entered F1 regardless of the lack of victories. Their road cars and engines have improved from the humble push mower to their sportest car since F1. Also the talk of Audi still sells alot of cars and don't need F1 is not a firm agument either. Hyundai sell a lot more cars than Audi for example with out F1?? Cheeper car I know but for the level of quality and price of an Audi it would not hurt them to invest in the pinnacle series instead of playing it safe and blowing so much money on Le Mans. Makes more bussiness sense as F1 would certainly broaden their market beyond just Europe.

F1Tos, i dont think that honda have made "leaps and bounds" since they entered F1. when they entered F1 with their own car and the hondola, they were far more competetive. they then peaked , as engine suppliers, and since then have gone steadily downhill. likewise in Moto GP, they dont have the same dominance as previously. re audi, surely as porsche basically own VW Audi, it would make more sense for porsche to return using their own name and sporting heritage? but i dont think that they would return.

As for honda, their road cars are very good!
But their F1 cars are some what not on par with the road cars, reliable comes to mind.
Yet i remember the days when they supplied Williams and McLaren with their engines in the good old days, then It was different as they were just an engine supplier, this day they have a team which is a whole new and different ball game!
