I think Ferrari could not afford Schu anymore and he was not willing to take a pay cut. I also think he was hurt by the reaction to the Monaco qualifying incident. It seemed like an opportunity to knock him. I doubt that any other driver would have been so openly condemned. Most drivers would have been given the benefit of doubt. Ever since the incidents with Hill and JV everything he did appeared to be tainted to a lot of fans. Compare that to Senna who in my opinion acted in a more calculated and pre meditated way. For some reason Senna got a pass and Schu was vilified.

oh yeah right !!! MS would have had no problem with KR 'cos team orders would have played a part....lets face it KR wouldn't have gone there with MS because he'd already seen the treatment Rubens got when he thought he was joining on a level playing field, Ferrari told MS he was out, end of story...I didn't like the man but if he'd lost his motivation after 16 years who can blame him..

Tommo... "The good thing about Schumacher retiring from F1 is he is now racing motorbikes!he says its far more fun and exciting to watch than the boring procession we now get with F1" I wonder why and when it became boring.... duh!! let me think

LOOK driver aids or no driver aids he still won the drivers championship 7 times. I admire schumi because he could have gone to mclaren or williams and have been world champion even more times but where did he choose FERRARI a team which had not won the drivers championship since the late 70's and not won the constructors since the early 80's. The fact he helped build the legendry scuderia ferrari again by being patient and by brilliant driving only endorses this. I know he did a few silly things but hey look at SENNA and PROST. AS for the driving aids if you look at the 1990's WILLIAMS cars they were leaps above anyone else so you had better discount MANSELL, HILL, JV.

sennaforever. when barrow went to ferrari, he knew that he was no match for schumi and would never have been in any doubt that he was anything but number 2 back-up driver, so kimi and schumi would be in a totally different scenario. maybe this is the reason that schumi decided to retire but i still think that his excuse that it was "to save massa's career, was a little tongue in cheek.

rich ard, I seem to recall when RB signed for Ferrari he was interviewed and asked about being a no 2 just like Irvine and he said no way 'cos he wouldn't have signed on those terms and would only have signed as a joint no 1.....unless of course he was just saying that for the media but in reality was no 2. as you are saying !!

i agree that this was probably for the media, as schumis qualities were far greater than rubens'. nobody would like to be publicly branded as a number 2 driver so rubens can be excused for the comment.
