its something i have thought about before, the mercedes was a bit iffy for a time, esp in 06. now its very fast, how can that be? in 06 the honda engine was pretty good, now its useless in a straight line etc.

its an interesting one. and a stupid rule.

interesting point brendan. if you freeze a poor engine, is it stuck for the next few years as a poor engine? honda is more fundamental, there is probably litle wrong with the engine, look at aguri (rip). their problem is in the chassis, drivers and team.

a)Another Sign that FA is making his mind over long term stint with Renault
b)Its well known fact that Teams were to submit their end of '06 specs to FIA for engine freeze. Renault was the best car on that grid, with McLaren plagued with reliability issues (mainly engine related, and some Hydraulics)and Schumacher had to retire at Suzuka'06 due to Engine Failure. If indeed all the teams indeed gave their '06 Enginees to FIA as Specs, there is not fat chance of results we have seen in 2007-08 McLaren & Ferrari have been the most reliable cars. There is definitely more than what meets eyes here.

But I don't expect fair play from FIA.It will look other way, that of "consenting adults"

Well seeing the Ferrari International Association has confirmed that MAclarens engine is the same now as it was then, it proves that alonso and beiatori are talking out of their collective A$£E again

It's widely recognised that the '06 Mercedes engine was one of the highest revving units in F1.And more revs = more power. And more power = less reliability. When the engines were limited to 19000rpm for the engine freeze regs at the start of '07 Mercedes were able to shift their focus from peak power(revs) to peak torque(more drivability). Obviously the biggest gain from this was reliability.

I would have thought that Renault and Honda have made the wrong decisions when trying to get the balance right whereas Mercedes, Ferrari and BMW made the right ones.

perhaps some teams know how to decipher stupid rules better then others.... I was under the impression that Renault was not that much interested last year and at one stage there were roumors they may abondon F1. In effect in 2007 their car was close to mediocre....

All teams had to present their engine to the fia and like RAMJAM 69 says some teams have looked at more power through torque and other areas rather than just sit on the fence. You can see the teams which have worked hard to do this winning races and being consistent.

Redbull uses the renault engine and recently its been up there in quali and races.

and alonso and webber have been pretty matched this year. not much in it between red bull and renault
