not much point in being fast, for one lap, if you are not going to produce the wins or even finish. just shows that the car is fast but the drivers consistency is in doubt.

F1 » Official: Fastest F1 driver of 2008 revealed

McLaren-Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari rival Felipe Massa may be battling it out for the glory of being crowned 2008 F1 World Champion - but neither has been the fastest driver in the races so far this year...

Just in case you haven't read Kimi's latest interview, he is equally dismissive of these statistics - saying 'what use are these if they come at the wrong time'...
I think these also underpin some really good driving - unfortunately blighted through error or team goof-ups. In Silverstone - in the wet, he was setting fastest lap after fastest lap for 6 consecutive laps catching that self-acclaimed specialist Hamilton - by nearly a second a lap. Till Ferrari ruined it with the wrong tyre choice.

If you notice, Kimi's fastest laps have generally come at the early parts of the race. Also, it is usually not simply one fastest lap, but the majority of the top 10 fastest laps in teh race.

It seems that when a driver is not the teams number one they are more motivated to putting in the fastest lap. When Barrichelo did this to Schu it seemed to create a bit of a rift. You could tell that Schu thought it was undermining his dominance.

Massa - In terms of raw pace

Kubica - For surpassing the abilty of the car & capitalising on the front fours misfourtunes

Alonso - He had no business winning any races this year in that car!

Bravo Barry!

Isn't it obvious... that Schumi-Massa link? Why all of the sudden the car doesn't work for Kimi...fishy business. While Kimi parties, Massa drives.
I can't wait for 2009 season...

Interestingly, of the 3 topteams, all drivers that have been outqualified and outscored so far have managed more fastest laps in the races (Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Kovalainen).

Still, I'm looking forward to see Heidfeld having more points at the end of the season than Kubica. The difference is just 8 points now. If the problem is the tires for all three, I'd say Heidfeld didn't do such a bad job compared to Raikkonen and especially the way less than impressive Kovalainen.

Kovalainen doesn't deserve to be at McLaren.

Too bad that he didn''t get a single point for that...
Bernie should somehow motivate drivers to fight for fastest laps...half a point per race maybe? :?

Statistics are for losers. If you want statistics watch American baseball, they have a statistic for everything but the game is still incredibly boring.

i agree it's a boring story but all it is saying is that statistically if kimi gets on more fastest lap he will hold an F1 record for it beating schumi etc. Im starting to wonder if massa/schumi have had alot more to do with developing the ferrari than kimi and that is why he is struggling with it so much this year his style is different to massa.
