not much point in being fast, for one lap, if you are not going to produce the wins or even finish. just shows that the car is fast but the drivers consistency is in doubt.

....Keke Rosberg won his championship (1982 I think )on one win only, the rest of the time he had points finishes.....that would be most consistent rather than fastest to take a Championship...

Last June, Ron Dennis, commenting on the Le Mans 24 Hour, said endurance racing was all strategy, not flat-out speed racing, like F1. In fact, he refused to call Le Mans a race at all.
I seem to recall his comment not going over so well at the time, even on this board.
Crashes aside, there are many weeks when fastest man on the track doesn't win F1. That's because, like all racing, strategy and luck play a huge role in F1.
These statistics and the won/lost records of these same drivers, prove that point.
Here's to hoping to see McLaren at Le Mans one day....

Agree with Rick in LA. The WDC is the man that gets the most point at the end of the season, that's all.

It is important to be fast, but consistency is even more important, an so take good care of the car.

Remember Fangio, he is used to say something like: a good driver is the one who wins by the minimum margin.

I agree on some point and disagree on other.
I do think that the probllems with Kimi this year is somewhat similar to Heidfeld's.
As soon as is tyre are up to the task, he is very very fast, but with the problem his car have bringing the tyre up the optimal temperatures, when he start to be real fast, it is already too late and he must save what is saveable.
Wich mean driving to the limit all the time and thus crashing in the wall much more often than what we are used to from him.

ed, fangio may have said that, but dont forget, that when he was racing, if his car broke down, he was abe to call in his teammate and take over the second car. didnt stirling lose a championship by letting fangio take his car??

Sinclair I disagree with using the most pole positions to determine who is fastest over a single lap. If Q3 was on a light fuel load then maybe so. Even then the track has not rubbered in compared to the race day. The big unknown is did he receive a draft from another driver on any of those laps.

With the expanded use of safety cars recently I am curious how many teams pit earlier than they need to in order to have enough fuel if the pits close. This could prevent some drivers from running light until the end of the race.

I had written this some days back on different story.

Kimi's ex team-mate had pointed out this Kimi's habit of posting fastest lap in finishing stages of race, especially in conditions where the fastest lap is not going to contribute to race outcome.
This is useless as needlessly causes addition stress to engine, which is expected to last two races. Kimi potentially must have lost crucial points to engine penalties driving the McLaren with Fragile engine in 2004-05.

This is good habit for other formulae, which award points for Fastest laps and poles,if thats what he wants...

On separate note - yes last two seasons Kimi does struggle to work tyres in initial phases of race.

MArk_ - good point this was the drawback of single lap qualifier system we had till 2005 which was diced in favor of top teams, whose drivers were better palced in previous races and went for their qualifier lap in end of session, when all the minnows has rubbered the track for them. But nothing has changed in new format as well.
Interesting to see Hamilton has struggled in fastest segment(Q2) for last two events.of course Monza was odd situation, with wrong tyre choices. Intresting was Lewis was on border of in Q2 in Singapore as well..don't if this will have bearing on his qualifiers over remaining event

i agree it's a boring story but all it is saying is that statistically if kimi gets on more fastest lap he will hold an F1 record for it beating schumi etc. Im starting to wonder if massa/schumi have had alot more to do with developing the ferrari than kimi and that is why he is struggling with it so much this year his style is different to massa.
